Does anyone know if there'll be a GPU upgrade for the Dell XPS M1530 in Europe (or on the UK site) any time soon? I'm itching to buy one, but I'd be playing games like Fallout 3 and I've heard that the 8600M GT just doesn't cut it and I was wondering if there's an upgrade coming out sometime in 2009?
Thanks.

The 8600M GT is a mid range card, it runs games well at medium settings at 1280x800. Some games can run even higher with better settings. It is a good laptop card now that a solder fix has been implemented in the newer cards. I would say go for it with good coupons. If you plan to game a bit, I like the 9 cell battery to give it leverage to help with ergonomics and also airflow. However, do not expect top of the line performance.

the gpu is soldered on, so unless dell decides to do a mobo overhaul, your out of luck.

You can OC the 8600m GT to as good as the 9700m GT and you can play 1440*900 at High with 8xAA with that without dropping a sweat. Its not that bad. I'd wait for the XPS studio line though.

I've been looking at the M1730 for a while now you see, and I preferred the M1530 due to it's cheaper price and smaller stature. -

An OC'd 8600m GT is not as good as a 9700m GT.
3dmark06 average:
8600m GT - 3347
8700m GT - 4717
9700m GT - 6242
Whlst there are a handfull of 8600's hitting in the region of the 9700, they are heavily overclocked and usually running hot, whereas the 9700 is running cool and still has the potential to be overclocked.
As regards the "1440*900 at High with 8xAA with that without dropping a sweat" - That doesn't mean anything unless you specify the game that it was achieved in. -
I don't see a reason for the graphics to be pumped to the max on a notebook. Decent performance and decent settings run games normally well. If you want to do heavy gaming get a desktop or prepare to cook yourself with a gaming laptop. OCing I find to be far to risky for a laptop where the entire unit can blow up instead of just a single part on a desktop.

Fallout 3 plays just fine on the 8600m GT.. the more important question you might want to try asking is "Once I finish Fallout 3, will I beat myself over the head with a golf club because I can't have all the time back that I spent playing Fallout 3?"
