It should work. On mine I change the Default audio device to the HDMI and it switches the audio output to the HDMI instantly.

When you switch the default to HDMI does the sound still come out the speakers?

Yes it still comes out of my computer speakers. When I test the settings for HDMI, no sound comes out of the tv either! I tried putting the computer to sleep after switching and that didnt work, I also tried setting the HDMI defualt and restarting, that didnt work either!

Your TV may not support the form of audio being sent by the computer. There's really nothing special about it but if your TV is old enough it probably won't.

Unplug the HDMI cable then change the audio default... Then plug the HDMI back in... If you still get sound from your speakers on your laptop, the audio did not get changed!

That's true, I guess I didn't take into account that it's still playing out of the laptop speakers. May be a driver issue =\.
