Hello guys, im in need of help and just registered on the forums since I cannot find a fix for this, I did a lot of research already but nothing seems to work. I have a 320 gig 7200rpm hard rive on the xps m1530 and the noise is pretty anoying, I already changed the bios settings to performance, downloaded the latest driver update and when I install it I get two files that pretty much contain nothing, I already burned a CD with the ISO file but nothing comes up, just shows up as a blank CD, I tried going to the Device Manager option and update the driver there but it didn't work either. I found a topic discussing the latest patch R206837 for the hard drive and some users had the same problem but they never replied and said how they fixed it, any help would be really appreciated.
PS: Sorry about the English its not my first language.

Bueno Diego:
Ok i must tell you that CD you have is VERY VERY VERY important, if is this the firmware for the 320 GB seagate (the same I have) you need to put the cd and restart the Laptop, press F12 on boot screen and chosse run CD or DVD, after that you must WAIT FOR LIKE 25 MINUTES and the the firmware will update your hard disk.
After this update your HDD not only will perform better also is going to stop those annoying beeps.
Now, in your language since english is not my first language too:
Pibe mandale el Cd en el boot aprieta F12, boote con el cd y espera alrededor de 25 minutos para que el firmware funcione sobre el seagate HDD, muy recomendable este update la verdad.. solo tenes que tener paciencia!! recorda 25 minutos!! -
Thanks a lot man I'm gonna do it right now and ill update.
Gracias tio esperemos se arregle. -
Haha I was just searching for this thread after reading this thread. I see you have posted there also.
Yeah I have the same Seagate hard drive in right now. The new ISO is blank! DO NOT burn it! I have wasted a few CDs doing this. I did it a really ghetto way. I merged the old ISO with the new DE16.LOD files and create my own CD with it. Then I run the CD on bootup. Waiting for 25 minutes actually worked...you have to wait!!! Once flashed, the hard drive was quiet for a few days. Now it's back.
Here is a screenshot of what you should see when you have flashed the DE16 to your hard drive:
-
It didnt boot at first and now its just restarting like crazy, non-stop, is that the 25min wait? or should I just stop it and do what you did hanime?
-
well is working now...
I'm not sure is that ISO you downloaded is empty, because actualy work for me. -
Well the ISO I have is empty so i'll have to do an ISO file with magicISO and lets hope it works.
-
Terrapirata, which ISO did you download? Is it the 1MB or 2MB one? Linky?
BTW, nice Apple theme!
degosaenz, the 25min wait is during while it is looking for the DE16.LOD file on your CD. Related thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4322900#post4322900 -
I downloaded this one!.. (i guess, i don't remember was A02)
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=32&fileid=266959 ),<---------(Mistake, this is not HDD Firmware!)
You know I think I still have the CD...(I only need remember where I saw it last time) -

-
Nope I am the confused one!!
i posted the optiarc firmware, the ISO for the HDD is not longer availableon dell web site!!!..
(I made a mistake in my last post Hanime!) I can't find the original ISO i downloaded...Why??? -
R206231.EXE (2MB 12/11/2008 v.A01)
R206837.EXE (1MB 12/19/2008 v.DE16) <--- 1MB???? Empty ISO! -
no luck yet lol, the 1MB file has no info, I made a new bootable image with the files and still no luck, now im thinking of getting the old one as you said and putting on the new files or just using the old file.
-
Let us know what you did, or if the old file works. I'm thinking of doing the firmware update again to see if will fix mine (with v.A01 - 2MB).
-
Well the ghetto way didnt worked, lets try the old file and if that doesnt work I give up for tonight.
-
The old file is working so far, I dont have any noise but ill update tomorrow by the afternoon to see how is the noise doing.
-
I just re-installed the firmware -- from DE16 to DE16 using the old file (2MB v.A01). Hmm my hard drive is definitely louder than it was before!! Something's wierd here.
This is what you should be seeing during the firmware upgrade, or similar:
Code:Model ST9320421ASG SN 5TJ0EG7Y FW DE16 on Generic..... Binary Download Attempting to read binary file: DE16.LOD (wait up to 25 minutes - DVD drive will spin on and off) Completing firmware download. Model ST9320421ASG SN 5TJ0EG7Y FW DE16 Exit With Code 0 F:\>

To the OP: Can you be more specific about the noise that you are talking about? You may have gone through all of this trouble (firmware flashing) for nothing. If you are talking about the infamous 'clicking', which is present on all recent Dell notebooks, then the fix is altogether different.
Either Dell has programmed the bios of their notebooks to constantly 'park' the read/write head of the hard drive, or this function is being implemented by the hard drive manufacturers. I myself have heard this noise on three different Dell notebooks.
If this is the noise that you hear (head parking), then there is presently only two solutions that I can think of - Notebook Hardware Control, and HDparm.
Do you hear this noise every 30 seconds or so, and is it 'clicking'? -
Well the noise is gone for good now, I used the old update, burned the ISO, booted, waited the 25min, restarted and the noise is gone! I tryed everything else and nothing worked but the driver update.
-
Lucky you. I'm stuck with a noisy drive even with the updated firmware.
