Just got this bad boy yesterday...

I read a couple of words scattered throughout, but has this been discussed at all? The left palm rest (hard drive) gets VERY HOT very quickly (2-3 minutes). Clicking / searching noise is also pretty consistent ...

anyone experiencing this? i have the 7200 rpm 120gb..

    thanks

Does it get HOT or warm? If it is hot at in you cannot touch it, then you have a problem. But other then that, there is not much between the palmrest and the HD, so yes it will get warm.

It's not warm -- it's hot -- like hotter than the battery. Is that still normal?

feelslikeit will be nic in the winter (hot clothes from the dryer), but it's just weirdly warm. i've had an inspiron 8600 for the last 4 years, by comparison.

ami crazy? should i say something? i feel like cs will jsut say it's normal...

also, i guess i can handle it, but i'm more worried about damage from heat to the drive, system, etc --- is this a concern?

    thanks everyone

What is it these days with the whole "my palm rest gets wayyy too hot" threads ???

Do you have the thing on your bed or in a poorly ventilated place?

Higher RPM drives tend to get hotter, I find Western Digital and Seagate drives in particular gets warm. The hard drive is under the metal palm rest so heat is conducted right through - nothing out of the ordinary for it to be warm.

The noise is the hard drive working.

I guess its summer, so things get slightly hotter I d imagine lol...

I'm experiencing this with my recently acquired Dell XPS M1530 laptop. I use Linux, so it was trivial for me to fix the hard disk clicking problem. I used the 'hdparm -B 254' command in /etc/rc.d/rc.local on my Fedora 9 installation.

You can find more information about this issue on ThinkWiki.

By the way, my machine is QUITE HOT also. The temperature monitor shows that the hard disk is running at 47-49°C and that the CPU cores are at about 38-45°C. It feels very hot underneath left and center, and on top of the left palm wrist rest.
