Like pretty much everyone else, I've had the overheating issue with the 8600GT cards for awhile now. Dell is offering to replace my motherboard. Is this wise? I do not want to end up having the same issue after wasting 10-14 days without a laptop.

If you are still warranty, why don't you ask for a replacement system? I got my M1330 replaced by a Studio XPS 1647...

No, if I was smart a couple months ago I would have extended it. I repeatedly asked them to replace the entire laptop but they ended up just offering to take a look at it and replace the mobo for free. I'm still unsure that this will fix it- I should probably continue to fuss about it and maybe then they'll eventually give me a new laptop.

The new motherboard will fix the problem... the question is how long it will last. I'd get the board replaced and sell the machine. Anything with an Nvidia 8-Series GPU is pretty much a "time bomb" as others have said.

So I suppose its not possible for them to send me a new laptop outside of warranty?

If you're outside of warranty, I'm pretty sure you ain't getting a replacement. I think you are getting this mobo replacement based on Dell's Nvidia GPU failure warranty (which, I believe, lasts one year after your original warranty ends). The warranty applies to the failure-prone Nvidia 8-series cards that were in the M1330 and the M1530. Otherwise I really don't see how they'd even offer you a mobo replacement without any warranty (lucky?). However, if my memory serves me right, I think I have heard of people getting replacements off this "GPU failure" warranty, though I'm not sure.

I'd suggest you do what Commander Wolf said. Since they've repeatedly declined you already for a replacement (btw you never want to "ask" for the replacement, you have to be more indirect ), who knows how long this "GPU failure" warranty will be on your side. Get the mobo replacement and sell it, then buy yourself something else.

Selling it would be ideal, but I feel like I'd be lucky to have someone take it off my hands. I just hope that it won't take them the full 14 days to service the thing, I cannot afford to be without a laptop for that long. I'll start checking eBay or Amazon for some methods to sell it off.
