Ok, while it's not as big of an issue as grainy screens or battery shortages, I figured that since other people were discussing brands/noisiness in drives and I was as well that I'd start a thread, keep this issue "organized."
I have the Optiarc drive in my Midnight Blue m1530, and the loudness is occasionally unbearable, so I talked to Tech support. Sometime in the next 2 days I'm having someone come replace it, and after looking up my service call info I will be getting the Panasonic drive.
I actually did do some googling but haven't found out anything about that particular drive.
Here is the info on it:
M698C ASSEMBLY..., DVD+/-RW..., 8, SLOT, 1530, PANASONIC...
Thanks in advance.
P.S.: I'm also worried about how much the tech has to do to remove the optical drive... I have a beautiful LG screen, nice palmrests... basically I'm only unhappy with the loudness of the drive... any experiences with replacing optical drives?
-
With optical drives, you have to remove the screen (lots of wires there), remove the palmrest (not too hard once you find all the screws to remove), and then you can remove the optical drive by unscrewing the two screws and then lifting it straight up.
-
So... do all M1530s ship with Panasonic now? Or do they ship with the Optiarc and you have to call in to get the Panasonic?
-
My brand new 1530 (received Friday) came with a Teac drive. Very silent.
-
I have a feeling they're trying to weed out Optiarcs, because the tech knew what was going on... like the minute I mentioned a loud optical drive he said he'd send a tech to my house.
I do hope he doesn't mess up my screen... although since it shipped with this LG DW306, any replacement would have the same part... if it got to the point where he screwed it up.
I'm not worried too much about the difficulty of it, I'm just worried about a sloppy technician. -
I have a Teac and it seems fairly quiet. The only issue I have is this error that always shows up in the System Event Viewer whenever I burn a disk:
"an error was detected on device \device\cdrom0 during a paging operation"
It shows up as a repeated error, sometimes with 20 or more instances in a row. The disks burn OK and it reads everything I've thrown at it, but this error baffles me. I've googled it, and there are lots of references to it going back many years, but not one good solution. -
Hmmmm... Anyone have any experience with the Panasonic? Or is that the same as the Matsh1ta?
-
Is that a hardware or software issue? I have a Teac and it seems to be working great and pretty quiet.

-
Same company.
I don't know, however, if drives with both brand names are used in the notebooks. But I know this, there are surely built at the same factory -
To me it SOUNDS like a software issue.

Ok. Well I checked on Dell's site, and they pulled the switcheroo on me. The DVDRW drive I now have coming in is:
ASSEMBLY..., DVD+/-RW..., 8, SLOT, 1530, SNO
Anybody know about SNO's? Part number K937C? -
Ok, so basically after trying to switch out my Optiarc, the part to be shipped to me was originally Panasonic, but they switched it to SNO (Sony NEC Optiarc!). It arrived today, and I already shipped it back.
They know it's Optiarc's causing noise, yet they try to send me ANOTHER Optiarc, and a refurbished one at that?!
I talked to tech support, they said ship it back, and if you want we'll send you another, and make sure it's a Panasonic.
While it's loud, it still reads and writes everything... I'm thinking since I seem to have a better Optiarc than many (no seemingly loose or touching parts or read/write problems) that I'll just keep it for now... that way I don't have to be paranoid about a tech messing with my LG screen and screwing up my smooth palmrest. -
I just got my M1530 on June 17th, and it came with a Teac DVD Writer. Seems pretty good. I have yet to burn anything in it, but I have installed a bunch of programs from discs and it seems to read them at a reasonable speed while staying reasonably quiet. It's not silent, but it seems normal for a DVD drive.

How about the bluray drive, can someone post info?. Btw are the bluray and dvd drives similar? could a bluray drive fit in a m1330?
just wondering. I have heard that the bluray drives are hotter.

Do they have on site support in Hawaii? I have the optirac and I don't like the fact that it is so noisy, but I also don't want the dell guy to mess other parts up while he takes everything apart.. It doesnt sound loose or anything like that so I guess I will wait and tell them to replace my drive later, like telling them that it got loud all of a sudden..
-
I know that its not a m1330 option but I have some experience opening and upgrading laptops so its not a problem for me, I would like to know how to get one :S, should I call Dell and tell them that I have a m1530 and I want to upgrade to bluray in order to buy the drive?.
Or are these drives similiar to the m1530 drive?
