I've bought this laptop back in 2008. Upgraded to windows 7 in Oct 2009.
I've always kept my laptop flat on my desk with no laptop cooler. My laptop has only been getting reallllly hot this pass month.
Attached is the HWmonitor graphic.
Is there more to this than just needing a laptop cooler?

PS. I don't...these are the temps with just winamp and some browsers open.

That cpu is running warm and the gpu is running HOT. The fan and heatsink might be clogged with dust.
How old is this machine? -

Dust might have accumulated during the 2 year period
Follow Cleaning step 2 of this guide and check for dust. (Dont remove heatsink just check for dust)

I recently had to do a complete tear down of my Vostro 1500. The temps started to climb too high. Not only was it time to replace the thermal paste because it had dried but the exhaust system was clogged with dust bunnies.
I found this inside my laptop.

Thanks guys. Thats a fuzzy bunny.
Can I check the thermal paste without removing the heatsink?
-
You'll need to take the heatsink off the CPU. -
These are my current temps. I hit the maxes while playing the original StarCraft. The screenshot was taken about an hour after with only Firefox and Trillian running.

Are you under volting your CPU? If not, that can help significantly reduce your CPU core temperature. RM Clock is what most users use for that purpose but ThrottleStop can also be used. Not as many features but less complicated for users new to under volting.
ThrottleStop 2.00 Beta 19

There have been a few improvements to RealTemp since version 3.00.
RealTemp 3.58.4

Just add GPU=1 to the INI configuration file for either program for Nvidia GPU temperature monitoring and you can try GPU=2 for ATI video cards.
100C is still within the Intel specification but that's a little warm for my lap.
M1530 Really Hot!
