I tried using my M1530 on the train today with battery power and the screen just went red. Well all the black bits went red anyway. In every program, even at the boot screen. So I'm guessing it's a hardware problem not a software problem as I haven't changed any drivers or installed any new software lately.

But it's just strange. I'm back home now with the laptop plugged in and the problems gone. The laptop is out of warranty (I think as I've had it more than a year in the UK) so returning it isn't an option. But has anyone else experienced this problem?

Does the problem exist on an external monitor?

It would appear that your backlight is dying. Backlights are relatively cheap parts, but they can be tricky to replace.

I just found out that I had an extended warranty because it's an XPS. They're sending an engineer over tomorrow to replace the screen.
