    Hello,

I've purchased XPS M1530 on Monday, and still wiating for it to arrive (scheduled to be shipped on 25th.)

The problem is, I did not know that Windows Vista was 32-bit version. I totally believed that it was 64-bit version since the CPU is in 64-bit, why would they send 32-bit operating system? Plus, they, no where in site nor during the phone conversation, that they stated "this is a 32-bit OEM CD" or anything like that.

After I order it via phone (this was an EPP purchase), I asked them to send me an e-mail about my order, and they sent me an e-mail with the list of components. It says,

420-8585 Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Ultimate 32-bit Edition English
    420-6436 Vista, PC-Restore, Dim/Insp
    310-9764 DELL RESOURCE DVD,BACK-UP, XPSM1530

Now, if the home version was originally included with the system (which is about $150 I believe), and I paid extra $150 for ultimate, it should be like a retail version. The retail version includes both 32-bit and 64-bit media based on my research.

I called my sales person (it was at a train station, so it was quite loud around), I asked, telling him that I need 64-bit version to test some programs for the company (well, I just want both actually, not that I need it for the company necessarily), and since the ultimate ships with 32-bit and 64-bit together on retail version, I need to make sure that they have both media on my recovery cd. First, he told me that I need to contact the technical support after I receive the unit, and second time, he said it is included with the media.

Based on what I've been seeing on the web, I see people who says that they do not ship 64-bit at all, and the other people saying that they do ship both media if you've purchased ultimate.

Does anyone know if I will be getting both 32-bit and 64-bit media? Or should I call them back and start yelling?

The fact is, if I paid $150 extra for the ultimate, I believe I deserve to have both media on my cd if I can buy a retail version for $220.

Thank you very much for your time!

you will only receive 32-bit version. To get the 64-bit you need to contact customer support. I suggest just going to there customer service chat & explain to them you got Ultimate & want them to send you the 64-bit edition. They should send it next-business day @ no charge. BS that they make the customer contact them to recieve the item considering you paid for it -_-

From what I've heard, the retail version of Vista Ultimate carries both 32 and 64 bit installations on the DVD. OEM DVDs of Vista Ultimate from Dell appear to be 32-bit only.

Yeah the OEM version is one or the other. Since you ordered Ultimate though you should have no problem getting the 64 bit disc.

If the low-level Dell representatives won't help, you have two easy options:
    1. Pay a very small fee for Microsoft to mail the Vista x64 disc.
    2. Download a disc image for free from the internet (Bittorrent, etc). Let me know if you need help with that.

Dell does not officially support Vista x64 on the XPS M1530, but you can find all the drivers you need easily enough. This thread is a good starting point to find most of your drivers, although some of these may be a little out of date. I recommend checking the manufacturers' sites to ensure that you have the latest drivers.

When I chatted with a Dell rep two days ago I asked about this and he said the Vista version was the 64-bit? Was he lying? Or maybe it's different in Canada?

But the XPS is only available with 4GB of RAM, so wouldn't that be awfully silly if it didn't ship with a 64-bit OS? That's what I asked the guy and he said that yes, it does indeed ship with a 64-bit version of Vista... very confusing...I'm going to try and check on that again, see if I can talk to someone else.

XPS is a consumer laptop... dont think many consumers are even aware of 64-bit

and that Vista x86 SP1 reports 4GB but only uses 3.x+GB... so consumers wont be complaining to Dell about their missing 0.5GB ram
