I already searched the forum for this topic but I couldn't find any hard numbers, excuse me if I missed something!

I'm doubting whether to purchase the 6-cell or 9-cell battery for my new M1530. My current M1530 has the 9-cell battery but I must say that the large size of it is quite annoying.

I travel to and from school every day and use the laptop daily on school, but we have power in each classroom for every student, so I don't need the extra battery size. All in all the only benefit I suppose the 9-cell battery gives me is the improved airflow, but how much of a benefit is this over the smaller 6-cell battery?

By lifting up the laptop the 9-cell battery improves the airflow below the XPS M1530 and thus helps the laptop stay cooler than when using the 6-cell battery. But, is there anyone who actually tested what the temperature difference exactly is, over certain amounts of time and under certain load?

honestly dude, if your table is flat and your using it for notes in class (as i am) i dont think theres a need for the increased air flow, i use a 6 cell and my temp doesnt go above 61. there should be no stress on the gpu or even the cpu (therefore less heat). just my opinion.

@ MRoyal - I agree with Mystik... For your usage, I would suggest sticking with a 6-cell.. but if you think the laptop is getting warmer or hot, because of the reduced ventilation below when compared with the 9-cell, I would suggest you make sure the vents are clean, particularly the main intake vent.. :) You can do this once in a few weeks probably or whenever you feel your laptop is warmer than it was before :) otherwise, since you said you have a power supply for each student, a 6-cell should stand you good for now.. You could always get a 9-cell later when you really feel the need for it :) Good luck.

6 cell battery only lasts for 2 to 2 1/2 hours while the 9 cell can last up to 4-5 hours. If you're in class all day and with intermittent hibernating or sleeping of your 1530 between classes then the 9 cell would be a better choice. If you have outlet access during class then no problem with the 6 cell but then again you'll be carrying the power brick.

    Thanks for the replies!

We do have power outlets in each class so that isn't a problem at all. However, I never though about the power brick! It would indeed be nice not to have to carry it around all the time! Although I'd probably still need it with the 9-cell battery as well, since I can't always run the laptop in battery-saving mode during certain classes (video/photo editing).

Hey, I have both the 9c and 6c, and use them both *intermittently* meaning..when I am out-and-about, I carry my 6c with me. And, I use the 9c at home as my *primary*.

And, I always carry brick/adapter with me, always... ;) :) I almost think it is essential to have with you...for when the batt' starts running low and needs to be charged ;) :)

    Cin ;) :)

haha i guess i didnt factor in the type of classes you are taking lol. mine are all lecture classes, yours i guess require a bit moderate usage with photo/video editing.

i have both of them too, and i like having the 9 cell because it keeps my legs from clogging the airflow, but the 6 cell battery keeps your lappy looking slick and lighter, and of course easier to take anywhere, i do recommend you buy the 6 cell, you wont need extra airflow even when video/foto editing, the laptop is designed to be that close to the surface and it wont get hot , BUT i always fit in the 9 cell when im playing on overclocked settings.
