Okay, I am not sure what I can do about this. The brand new laptop (2.6) is sitting on the desk with proper airflow, and I'm not DOING anything but reading a website and the fan is going.
Is there some control for this somewhere? This seems very fan happy.
I'm almost wishing I got the 1330 -- I just wanted more pixels but this laptop is huge.

The fan is needed to cool components inside the computer, it has little (but some) to do with what you are doing - just because you are "only looking at a website" doesn't mean your computer isn't going through a defrag, virus scan or many other things that you may or may not know about. You are looking to turn the fan off so your components overheat so you can sit at your desk without the fan on??
-
The fan speed has alot to do with what one is doing on the computer. The GPU is the component which requires most cooling in the M1530 and with Vista, the temp will rise to the degree when cooling is needed even when doing simple tasks like surfing.
XP is known to be less demanding for the GPU and therefor, does not require constant airflow to stay cool. -
I hear you, but my older computer, running vista, was not so loud. And it's pointed at my flipping lap.

hmm most 15" w/ ded vid card won't run it's fan to the point where it's noticeable until you start doing something demanding. hell even my friends MBP w/ 8600M GT 256mb is dead silent while having multiple web browsers open. my xps m1330 with 8400gs is dead silent as well under 'normal' use. you may want to try looking at what's running in the background.

Well Yike and lindstroem pretty much answered your questions there. But are you sure you don't have anything blocking the vents?
I also never noticed that big of a difference between the 1530 and 1330 to be honest. I mean, I know they're physically different in size, but it never struck me as a significant difference. I needed a new laptop to take around with me to classes, and I had a choice, but ended up going with the 1530 because I wouldn't be moving around too much and I wanted the extra power/screen size for web development. -
nope, nothing blocking. I'm seriously sitting here doing nothing. There is nothing happening on the machine, I'm not touching it. Every few mins, the fan cranks on for about 10 seconds, then stops. Then silence for a few mins, then it cranks on again.
Kinda odd. Wondering if the 1330 has the same problem. -
If you don't like the fact that the fans go on...return it, get a refund and buy another company. I don't know of many "fanless" laptops though....
-
i say return it for a m1330. technically it may be a minute difference on paper but in actuality it makes a big difference in terms portability and convenience.

My new m1530's is also behaving rather oddly. It just kicked in when the CPU temp is showing 42C. About 20 minutes before that, it kicked in when the temp was 38C. And it does that quite a bit.
I wasn't even using it when that happened: I was working on my other machine. I realize the m1530s run a bit hot, but it doesn't seem like this one is except the fan seems to think so.
Any thoughts on what the issue could be? -
I think the fan speed algorithm is based upon both the CPU and GPU temp. My M1530 does cycle the fan even if the computer is idling. Usually, the fan will kick in when the GPU hits 68 degrees and then shuts off when the GPU temp is reduced to 57. The CPU temp is usually lower than the GPU. The fan speed will increase further when gaming, where the GPU temp can hit 75 degrees. I don't find the fan noise to be a problem, but this is a matter of preference.

I have exaclty the same problem. I emailed dell and no response. I was watching a movie on windows media player just 10 minutes ago and the fan NEVER (and i mean never) stopped. I have big speakers and i could hear the fan on the background. When the movie ended the fan stopped.
And right now, as i am typing having only firefox on, the fan goes crazy again. Some might say this is not that annoying. But imagine listening to the fan at max RPM 8 minutes out of 10 while trying to concentrate for studying... -
polys Please do not revive dead threads (6 months or older) rather create a new thread
Thank you
M1530 fan noise -- seriously?
