Hi all,
I have an XPS M1530 which just had its motherboard replaced. I've now noticed that the underside of the laptop directly under the touchpad gets very hot. Its far hotter than any other area of the laptop even on load!
![]()
Its a new mobo and not a refurb. After using for half an hour it becomes quite uncomfortable on my lap. I initially thought it might be the WLAN card but ive switched it off and used ethernet instead. The problem persists. Has anyone else experienced this problem with their systems?
Ive just run out of warranty.
Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks - Ash

Check that your fan has been plugged back in. Does it come on at all?
-
Wow thanks for the prompt reply!
The fan is actually plugged in and working as it should.
My idle CPU temp is 55C and idle GPU 60C. And i can hardly feel the heat either. The only heat i feel is the one under the touchpad area is veryy hot! -
Ok, I don't have any other suggestions then sorry! Hopefully someone else will though, it sounds odd.
-
hmm maybe the wireless is just touching the aluminum cover thats why its warm...one question, is the aluminum hood for the wireless bent? if it is bend it back out carefully.
-
Directly under the touchpad IS where the wireless card is located. Try fluffboy's idea. Then again it could just be the indicator lights~
-
I always get that, even when i'm not using wifi.
Just accept it or make some laptop stand with fans running under it like i did. -
Cheers for the idea 'fluffboy' i think il do that. Infact, before the tech guy left he didnt gimme back those covers that go on the lose WWAN and the other module wire ends!
You guys are really kind for replying so promptly, thank you all i really appreciate it -
The cover is as straight as it was when it came new. No dents or marks. -
Try electrical tape over the antenna contacts. altho i dont know if there is enough power in that area to generate that much heat.
There might be dust cught on the inside of the heatsink, you wont see it from the outside you will have to open up your pc.
Failing that you might need to re apply some thermal compound to both the CPU and GPU to better facillitate heat transfer from the chips though the heat pipes to the heatsink and thus (if its dust free) to the outside air.
You are experiencing misplaced heat because the pathways to the environment are not as conductive for heat exhaust as the case itself. Evergy always follows the path of least resistance! good luck mate

cheers -
thanks very much for ur advice, i did put some electrical tape around them but it still heats up. however, i think i might reapply some decent compound as u suggested. im just gonna try n get hold of some good stuff over the next few days and have a go. u may be onto something with regards to the heat flowing.
il keep everyone posted over the next few days. thank you everyone for ur advice

Hey,
i have the m1330.
mine is not hot in that spot. it's freakin boiling!
i had a piece of nylon on the table which i didn't see.
it melted on the thing... couldn't get it out for days...
right under the mouse pad!
i assume cause mine is smaller it's even hotter!...
so isn't it dell's fault?
why would go through all that... they suppose to find a solution right?
by the way, i think it started when i tried the a15 bios... -
I know 'remda' its extremely frustrating isnt it. I spoke to dell they just told me to reflash the bios which i did but had no effect. Us M1530 users are using the A12 version.
I spoke to Dell a week ago regarding a problem my DVD drive not being recognised. Although my warranty has just run out, i logged the problem before it had done so, so Dell are sending out a tech on Tuesday to have a look. I will mention the heat problem to him as its veryyy hot.
'YFNHT' thanks for the guide mate, as soon as the tech guy leaves im gonna get out the screw drivers and hammer (okay maybe not hammer), to change the thermal compound hopefully -
Just a quick update guys...
The Dell support operator telephoned me today to check up on the situation and i reported that the problem is still there. He checked with his supervisor and advised me that i send the laptop back to them on Tues instead of a tech guy coming round. His words were
''as your warranty has expired, it would be better if we take it and give it a thorough check for problems just incase they come up again whilst ur out of warranty''.
Not bad i suppose lol. Dell Support is pretty good in my opinion.
Thanks everyone for ur posts and suggestions
