1.yes, it is as noisy as any slot loading drive.
2.the fans are audible only when the lappy is under stress.. and the hard disk will heat up because it is in contact with the palm rest..
3.it depends on how you use it..if your careful with your baby, then it'll last 3 years or perhaps more

I have the Optiarc (Sony) drive and yeah, it clunks when loading disks. I don't consider it a big deal, and it's quiet during use.

I haven't noticed a lot of fan noise. I don't really game much though, so it's possible I'm just not stressing my system the way other guys might.

Sure it can last 3 years. Unless you mistreat it, I can't see why it wouldn't. I mean, any individual system could fail of course, but there's nothing to suggest that the average XPS couldn't function as intended for many years.

Yes the optiarc drive makes some noise - in normal situations, office, rooms,.. where its not DEAD silence i dont even notice or hear it.. but you'll notice it maybe late at night in ur room when its VERY quiet. I think its silly to get upset about it.. its onyl when u load or eject a cd anyway.. otherwise its fine like any other cd drive.

Depending on what HDD u get, it will heat up - but generally you will just feel warmth under our left palm, which is where the HDD is located. From personalyt experience i know for a fact that the Hitachi 200gig is much cooler than the Seagate - i've had both, the seagate runs almost 10degress warmer.. however its not something that has caused a problem for me.

Interestingly, both myself and a colleague both find that the fans tend to swtich on even when the machine is idle, doign nothign or very little. Odd.. i dont see why it should heat up at all.. anyway.. the result is i generally turn it off at night becuase my desk is close to my bed and it annoys me. Not a deal breaker tho.

As far as longevity goes, my previous notebook before my m1530 was a 7 year old insprion 2500. .. that lasted 7 years.. and it was built like rubbish from the start. These XPS machines are very solid so they should last, but i dont know why you worry, becuase buying these machines without a 3 yr warranty anyway is a stupid idea - spending this amount of money on a notebook surely warrants the additional piece of mind of the warranty... so ge the 3yr.. and then if anyting breaks, they'll replace it.

    Good luck.

Is it normal for the DVD drive to clunk away on boot up? It just seems kinda odd though I guess it's more noticeable on a laptop vs a desktop.

I have the Teac slot load DVD drive and it's pretty quiet. It makes a little noise when it first grabs the disc, but once its in, its pretty quiet.
