Well, I need a laptop for college and I want one that will be better than, or at least as good as my desktop. Would an M1530 with a 2.4 CPU, 3 gigs of ram, an 8600gt and a 7200rpm HD out perform my desktop with these specs.:

    Type: a1250n
    AMD X2 3800+
    7800 gt
    2 gigs of ram
    X-fi audio card

With vista aero I got a 5.9 in graphics and a 5.8 in gaming graphics.

Can you tell me how the two would compare? Thanks.

By far and beyond. The core 2 duo out performs x2 AMD. That 3800 is a slow chip. Equal to a 1.6ghz core duo. Get the 258mb vid card and you're set.

That makes sense. I got that X2 right when it came out, which was a while ago. I'm more concerned about the video card though, because that'll have the biggest impact on gaming. My 7800gt has served me surprising well, and I'd hate to get anything less than it.

The CPU will be much faster... there is no question about that. However, my Vostro has a very similar spec to the m1530 you mention (2.4 CPU, 2 gigs of ram, an 8600M GT and a 7200 rpm HD). With Vista Aero, I'm getting a 4.6 for Graphics and a 5.2 for Gaming Graphics... Not quite meeting the 5.9/5.8 on your desktop. The question is if this machine is to be used for gaming, will the 7800 GT desktop card out perform the 8600M mobile card? Here is an old thread I found on the subject:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php/t-155233.html

From what I can see, the 8600M GT will slower than the 7800 GT but then again I'm not in a lab running controlled tests...

They will be a pretty equal with the 7800GT being a bit better overall due to the 256bit bus. be aware that by next year an 8600GT Mobile will not handle future games very well. I say keep your desktop and bring it with you to school and buy a thin and light for class.

I agree with "Vengance 01" somethings in desktop are better and somein laptop are better... but nothing better than a new laptop.. I think you should be ok with XPS1530..
