In December, Dell replaced my motherboard and heatsink for a second time due to heat issues. In the last couple of days, I've noticed it's climbed yet again. I'm now going to try Artic Silver 5 to see if that'll be up to the job, in a last ditch before I have to get Dell out here again (I'm not impressed with this at all).

As a reference, here are my current temps:

    Idle/Light Load
GPU - 60-70*C (usually towards the higher end of that scale under light load like watching a video)
    CPU - 50 - 60*C
    Northbridge - 50-55*C

Full Load (running Prime95 or the likes)
    GPU - 85*C+
    CPU - 90*C+
    Northbridge - 60-70*C

My fan runs quite loudly constantly, the vents and fins are clean. I can only assume that it's the crappy thermal paste they use OEM that's failed me again.

Is there anything I should know before I put AS5 on it? Should I peel the pad off the north bridge and put it on there as well?

Dont touch the Northbridge. Only apply it to the CPU and GPU.

Not sure how much better it will improve your temps, but best of luck

I did the same before and they did nothing to my temps. It's weird. It's as if the actual heatsink/fan assembly permanently increases in temps the longer you use it.

It is the heatsink/fan assembly that causes the overheating because everytime you get it replaced by Dell, temps drop heaps.

Have you replaced the thermal heat pads on the GPU / Northbridge chip with copper shims? If not then I highly recommend it. I did both on my M1330 using arctic silver thermal paste and also applied the same to my CPU. Temps are now amazingly low and I rarely hear the fan spin up.

You may also want to try keeping your laptop off your legs and on a proper support like the Logitech Portable Lapdesk N315 as blocking any of the air vents will quickly build up temperatures in the back and you will end up with a hot laptop and leg !!
