Long story short, I always use a headset when I need a mic, so I want to basically disable the internal mic but I can't figure it out.

I'm running WinXP with the sigmaTel drivers on my M1530

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager (on left side bar)

Find the Microphone, and disable it. ;)
It will probably be in Sound Controllers, or Human Interface Devices. But if not, you'll just have to look around in there. :p

Hmm, if you know the manufacurer of your mic, then try to disable whatever is under that brand.

Otherwise, im not sure. You could try things, and if thats not it, just re-enable it. Kinda like a shot in the dark.
Why do you want to disable it anyway?

Having the same annoying problem with the internal mics. I have a Korg Nanokey usb controller connected to my dell m1530, and when i go to record in Sony Acid 7.0 the clicking of the keys on the keyboard as well as any other sound(s) are picked up by the dual digital mics. I've tried disabling the webcam in the Device Manager with no success. Even emailed Dell and this is what they said:
"Please click on speaker icon that is on the bottom right corner of the desktop tool bar. And select the 'recording devices' option and then select the webcam and disable the mic option there."
All I have is a "Sound Recording" tab with Sigmatel Audio highlighted, the webcam doesn't appear in the drop down window.
Have spent alot of time on the web looking for an answer ........
NOTEBOOKREVIEW.COM was an invaluable resource in making my decision to purchase the M1530, the links and tutorials enabled me to install XP PRO in a Dual Boot OS setup without a hitch.......... But the internal mics to a webcam i didn't need or even want is driving me up a wall ....... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cause I have a laptop cooler and the fans are REALLY loud over the mic on the laptop, so when I play games I use my headset mic, but for some reason it always defaults to the laptop mic and I can't figure it out.

I was searching the webs for a fix for this and I finally just came across it and thought I'd share with you because I understand your pain.

I have a dell vostro with sigmatel, so it's pretty much the same. I use a 3.5mm headset plug-in that I want to use as a mic+headphones, but Steam games (CS, TF2, L4D) all revert back to the integrated mic. Here's how I fixed it:

Select Microphone from 'Recording Control' [Select the speaker, 'Volume' in the taskbar, >Options >Properties >Recording Radio box >Ok. It should say something like Microphone, Digital and Line In. Select your mic and just leave that open for now.

Test with Sound Recorder to make sure your mic is actually responsive inside windows.

Now launch your game and test the mic in the options. It's probably back to the digital mic now, isn't it? Alt+Tab out of the game back to the Recording Control and you'll see that it back to Digital Mic (the check box), put it back to your microphone and go back to the game. Tada! Worked perfectly for me, so I hope it helps you.

    And I'm gone forever :)

Sorry for not replying for so long, I completely forgot I posted this.

I'm actually trying the thing that hayisforhorses posted, but it's not working.

I'm about to just rip open the computer and short out the onboard mic.

P.S. Is there a different driver I can use? I hate this SigmaTel BS
