i've searched for an answer in this confusion of mine.

is there anybody on here that can clarify what type of memory goes in an XPS M170.

    here are my findings:

i saw on a few posts here that it uses PC2-4200

the crucial scan said that is uses PC2-5300

dell.com sells PC2-5300 type memory specifically for my service tag number

also from all the posts i've seen people have bought PC2-4200 for their M170.

so i just want to know which one is for sure the right type?

    thanks.

Any retail PC-4200 or PC-5300 (or 5400) DDR2-SODIMM module will work in the M170. PC-6400 may also work, but it will probably downclock to PC5300 speeds.

i've read somewhere that you can use any PC2 type ram. the max for PC2 is 6400, would that work too? or just strictly up to the PC-5300?

    thanks for the reply.

Again, it might, and if it did, you won't benefit from it because it will downclock its frequency. So you would be better off purchasing PC 5300. I think the best right now are the Kingston HyperX DDR2 667 low latency modules.

oh okay thanks, i thought about the down-clocking. anyway, i went ahead and purchased the 2GB PC2-5300 kit from newegg; i picked the corsair brand though.

    thanks for the tips!
