I recently purchased an M1710 and after about a day it started randomly rebooting. I reformatted it and reinstalled the OS hoping to fix it but it didn't, the computer actually rebooted during the setup when it wasn't supposed to. I have since been able to get the OS installed and the computer worked fine for about 3 days. I finally updated CS: Source and played it. After i quit the game(just a quick me vs bots to see how it ran) I clicked the unblock button the popup asking if i want to continue blocking the program and the restarting started again. Half the time I don't get to windows before it reboots. It'll get past the Dell screen and into the Windows XP loading and then reboot. It booted in safe mode which is where I am now as I type this. Has anyone encountered this and have any idea what is causing it? I updated my bios to the lastest edition hoping that would solve the problem, but it did not.

Sounds to me it could be a cooling problem. The BIOS may also be it. But I would call Dell and see what they have to say. Just make sure you stress to them you are un-satisfied with this and they will most likely get you a new one. But to me that is better than fixing the old one.

I just rebooted and it started it.
I do agree that it seems it could be cooling related, is there somewhere i can check to see what temperature my system is running? -

You can download 18kfangui and upgrade to I9kfangui and that might work...I haven't seen if they upgraded to support more computers yet. But it is worth a try.

I would say heat could be the cause. Google motherboard temp monitor. Like Mbm5, speed fan .. are good.

It has to be heat, idling it can get up to 45 celsius. I've emailed dell and am now just being patient.

My 640m rebooted by itself several times while I was running a virus scan as well as surfing the net and running Limewire all at the same time. One thing I did notice is that the air coming out of the fan duct was somewhat warmer than usual. CPU usage was ranging betwen 60% - 80%. The pc was on my lap at the time it was rebooting. The air intake was not blocked and when I put the pc on a table top it would no longer reboot. I figured the rebooting was caused by overheating because it stopped rebooting after taking it off my lap. Even though the air intake was not blocked, my body was probably acting as an insulator and causing the pc to stay a bit warmer??

Any news on this thread? My 4 month old has gone through bouts of this behavior.
I "downgraded" XP to Home and installed I8kfangui and this let me use it for the last two months without too much trouble. But now it's happening again. Random bluescreens.
Specs are: M1710, Core Duo T2500 @2.0 GHz, 2Gb RAM, 60 Gb HDD, 512Mb GeForce Go 7900
Will Dell replace my laptop if I make enough of a stink? Because I think this is a lemon. -

Well it is a blue screen it might not be overheating. Usually if the processor gets to hot the computer will just reset. If you could post part of the blue screen it will be easier to help out.

Stop Errors
IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL errors
When I go through the Windows error reporting scheme, it comes back telling me to download latest video driver or disable hardware acceleration.
I have installed the latest driver from nVidia for the 7 series GO cards.
I am now trying the hardware acceleration down a notch or two.
I am extremely frustrated with this computer. 4 months old. I can see one reload of windows, because I averate 4-6 months between reloads on my gaming desktop. I reloaded from Dell's onboard image like 4 times between November and January. They replaced the motherboard in January and it ran ok until now.
First symptom is random errors in applications. Then bluescreen (with default restart) which looks like a reset. So I turn off the 'automatic restart' and see the actual bluescreens. Then, after a day or two with random blue screens, I get memory errors, and/or missing C:\windows\system\config messages.
This silly thing came with media center. In January, just before they replaced it, I read an article (here or somewhere like here) that mentioned installing Home or Pro instead and that resolving some issues. Indeed, that seems to have helped. For a while. Or maybe it was all a coincidence.
