    Hi guys,

    I've noticed that my XPS M1710 is being reported as running at 998mhz (rather than 2ghz per core) in System Properties even while plugged into the mains. In other words it's being throttled. This might explain why I am having issues trying to play CS: Source?

    How can I get this to bump up to the 2ghz per core that it Can run at?

    Temps are not an issue - the system is new plus it's in a cold room at the moment.

    Start->Control Panel->Power Options

    Change the "Power Scheme" to "Always ON"

    Also, you should be able to do the same thing through Dell QuickSet if you have it enabled. But the CPU should clock up when it is needed, as long as you aren't in the "max battery" power scheme.

    My 2GHz Core2Duo usually reports at 1GHz, but jumps to 2GHz pretty quickly when placed under load.

    It thinks it's to conserve power and reduce heat.

    Playing a game your CPU is operating under full speed.

    Done what you suggested - still always at 998mhz in windows - jumps to 2ghz when IE is opened... i'd rather it was at full cpu power all the time when on AC mode!

    Source Benchmark still doesnt work, even after a re-install... strange... though the game plays fiine o_O

    Oh well...

    Thank you guys.

    ...why have it always at 2GHz? that wastes power and makes all kinds of extra heat. It will just clock higher when under high use. You aren't losing any performance, just gaining a cooler system and lower power usage when not on the mains.

    Trust me, you dont want your cpu at full power all the time, they dont even run at full constant power on desktops anymore,the speed step technology is seamless, if you too your notebook, and compared it to one of the same config with the cpu stuck at full power, you would not be able to tell the difference performance wise, the other book would be incredibly hot, and would probably have a much shorter lifespan, but it wouldnt be any more powerful, and the speed throttling will have no effect on css,the cpu ramps up to speed as it its needed , css is more likely a video card issue or you may have too many background processes running.

    Thanks for your inputs guys.

    CSS - The system was formatted and only STeam/BF2142 have been installed. Latest Gcard driver from Dell.

    Game works (as does BF2142 on full settings at max res o_O - unbelievable) but the benchmark always crashes out to desktop with a Memory Write system error :( could be worse... but how am I supposed to compare without bencheys? ;)
