    a) Possible?
    b) Worth it?
and c) What are the options in terms of new ones.

    Thanks for any help,

What card do you have right now? The best one I guess it's the 7950M GTX.

The best one is indeed a Geforce Go 7950 GTX 512mb.
Pretty easy to come by on eBay, but pretty expensive tho.
If you upgrade from a Go 7900 GTX, it's not worth it. The improvement is minor. In that case I would wait till your 7900 GTX gets broken (it will in the end, trust me), and then get a 7950 gtx, which will be much cheaper priced by that time.
