The computer was working fine then I left it for a minute when I came back it was running on battery even though the Jack was plugged in. I do not have the original dell os installed but I had enough time to run diagnostics of the Dell resource CD before the battery died. The battery diagnostics had 3 tests the first said there was no AC/DC adapter plugged in the second passed and the third said the wrong adapter was being used. I am using the original Dell 130w AC/DC adapter so that is not the problem.
The computer ran fine on battery power until the battery died. Now when I plug the jack into the computer with the battery in the computer the battery charge light comes on green and blinks off every 3-4 seconds. Whenever the battery charge light blinks off the purple light inside the media controls on the front flashes on at half intensity and the led on the power brick dims. When I unplug the AC/DC power jack the battery charge light goes out.
When I try to power on the machine with the battery and AC/DC adapter plugged in I can hear the fans spinning up and the red l.e.d. lights go on the 3 power lights (power on the left ? in the middle and battery on the right) turn green, then the battery light flashes orange and the system shuts down.
When I try to power the computer on with no battery the green power light on the left keeps flashing a couple times a second and the purple media control light on the front flashes on when the green power light flashes off. But it does not power on.
If I try to turn on the computer with just the battery the battery light on the far right flashes orange and nothing happens since the battery is dead.
I looked over the the power cord and nothing looks physically wrong except I am not sure how long the pin that is in the jack that plugs into the computer is supposed to be. When I went through the troubleshooting tree on the dell site the pin shown in the picture came out almost all the way. The pin in my jack is back about halfway. Can anyone with a M1710 and a 130w power brick with the 3 pronged cord coming into the brick confirm this is right.
If the pin is supposed to be halfway back then anyone who has had experience with power supply problems because of the motherboard can tell me the symptoms it would be appreciated.
Also if anyone knows what the above symptoms most likely point to please let me know.
M1710 won't power on
