I want as much horsepower as I can get in a desktop replacement laptop. But I'm not really a gamer. Biggest use of the machine will be video/photo processing (conversion/transcoding), and playing HD/Blu-ray content. Will SLI be a total waste for me? If so, I would likely opt for the cheaper 8700M GT instead of 8800M GTX.
Thanks,
Joe

A single 8800M GTX card blows 2 8700M GT cards in SLI. I'd say stick with the single 8800M GTX card, the M1730 with a single 8800M GTX card will more then fulfill your needs, unless you really really really want the 8800M GTX in SLI.

Anything over an 8400m GS would pretty much be overkill.

Wouldn't a Dell Precision be a better choice than an M1730?

i second that. maybe you should look in a different direction for your laptop.
maybe you should get a small 13" laptop with blu-ray (like the dell m1330), and a big external monitor, wireless mouse and keyboard... docking station type thing.
that might be the best of both worlds, because really, other than the graphics card option, there isn't much of a reason to get an expensive DTR -
yeah id have to agree . anything more than a 8800gtx single card would be total overkill. dont soun as if you need sli at all.

Thanks for all of the responses.
And looks like configuring the M1730 online to have a single 8800gtx is not an option. -

M1730 - is SLI overkill for a non-gamer ?
