You know why I said and I quote: "All it takes is a simple BIOS update to fix or enable that. But they refused; or at least." in my post?

Is because, if they can fix an issue the E1705 faced - the last BIOS update was thought to be in 2006, it was not until December 06 2009 that Dell released a fix that increased fan speeds for the easily fried 7900GS' issue:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...ron-e1705-9400-bios-update-month-a10-o_o.html

Now with that in mind, think about this; if they can do that to a 4 1/2 year old machine, what is the M1730 compared to that? Maybe they (Dell) thought the M1730s "weren't as bad as the cooked up 7900s"? Just an opinion, they took the time to release a new BIOS for the Inspiron, but not for the XPS that is thought to be premium paid users that we bought for?

    And I quote afhstingray's post:

Isn`t there anybody with programming skills or some friends with expertise in this ? I mean, how hard could it actually be to look over the BIOS and rewrite it a bit ?

I think the problem lies with, if it goes wrong, (in anyway) - their test machine will be bricked, yes?

If I'm honest, I know enough about computers to not upgrade BIOS unless its imperative due to the bricking rate.
If Dell make it, you would hope it's a nice fool proof upgrade.

i wish there was somebody like that.
i tried to mess around with it but my bios development knowledge is zero, and last time i touched assembler was 10 years ago so i am not the guy to do it.
what about zfactor, didn't he modify the M17 bios a while back ?

True, but I don't think we can count on Dell helping us with this ...

i am starting to think so too.
guess eBaying x9000 is the only solution.

With the X9000 @ > 3.2 the fans kick in at max, it looks like this is the only solution for our fluctuating temps.
With my 2 years old €3800,- expensive gaming rig without a proper support, I think we're screwed. The only way out of this mess is the M17x while we just ask for a better fan controller. Dell leaves us no choice.

Yes it's a useless piece of crap nowadays.
I removed it one year ago when I found out while testing.

hey guys, so just to get this correct -
overclocking my X9000 CPU chip will make all three fans come on at once at max strength? at the moment i'm just internet browsing and the machine is very hot. the cpu fan isn't even on yet!
so, do any of you know which thread deals with the overclocking of the x9000 extreme 2.8ghz?
i love my machine and want it to last as long as possible. not watch it burn out after a few more months.
    thanks

EDIT: with some looking around and tweaking, i found the overclocking option. it was far easier than i had ever thought. i had anticipated it being more like undervolting. and the fans are also running at full speed now, so lets hope that the machine stays cooler.

Dell just released A11 BIOS dated yesterday. I installed it, my fan is making a lot of noise - but then that might be good!

I also updated the NVIDIA BIOS, with the NVIDIA_-GEFORCE-GO-8700M-GT-_A00_R230862 but that has been out for a while.

My m1730 locks up about twice a month so it will be while before I know if anything improved.

Should I change the video driver? I am running with 7.15.11.7678 for Vista 64bit with SP2.

Here you go fractal - looks like the BIOS is simply to address the fan issue. No other mention of additional details.

I would suggest to use a copper shim mod. My 8800gtx used to max at 85c now will not go past 79c and the temp drops quicker and raise slower. They are on sale on ebay just search for m1730 copper shim

The A11 BIOS is terrible, it makes the fans kick on full blast every few seconds while playing any 3D game (and even when just sitting at the desktop in Ubuntu Linux). I'm going to downgrade to A10.

^^ i do like that it keeps the idle temps relatively low and prevents the heat/cool cycles of the card like all other bioses.
