I have a chance to compare LG (LPL0032) and Sharp(SHP13D9). I set them at the same setting from contrast, brightness, gama and let them sit side by side.
Below are their pictures. Left are Sharp and Right are LG. LG screen provides deeper black and more vibrant colors. I definitely pick LG over sharp.

you can really see the differnce.
-
Wow huge difference. The LG is definitely the better screen!
-
yeap,LG rocks!
-
-
wow LG looks 100X better
-
I can't tell that the difference is that great from the pictures, though I do think the screen on the right looks better. The Sharp screen in my 1720 doesn't seem to have as much of a light bleed problem as yours does. It does have that slight green tint to the blue sky the way yours does. However overall it had better colors than the LED screen in the M1330 I sent back (which was identified by HardwareID in Device Manager as being LCD2306, which someone identified as Toshiba). The best screens I've ever seen are LG CCFL screens and not LED screens.

The Goldstar screen does look better.
-
I also have M1330 equip with AOU screen (this is the code, I don't know its vendor name). LG also outshines AOU.
After I see LG screen, I can no longer stand Sharp screen. That is the conclusion of the comparison between LG and Sharp screen.
Honestly, if I don't have chance to see LG screen, I will have no problem to live with Sharp screen. -
This may be slightly offtopic, but where did you get your wallpaper? It looks amazing.
-
I got it from http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/ . It appears in top 10 highest rating. It looks awesome in 17" screen of M1730. -
-
I get used to its slogan "Life's Good" so I forgot its origin. -
-
Yeah I always ask people "what does LG stand for" and they always say "life's good", and I laugh! It's lucky goldstar, when the two companies Lucky (chem company) and goldstar (appliance company) formed together.

Does anyone know if the LG panel is only 6-bit? I'm seeing horrible dithering on my M1730 (dual 8800m on Vista Ultimate x64) and blocky/grainy gradients, and I've confirmed it's the LG panel (LPL0032 in device manager). My old M1710 wasn't nearly as bright, but the gradients were smooth. Colors are also horribly oversaturated, and I had to reduce my gamma to 30% to get even remotely close to accurate blacks.
EDIT: Also, in Device Manager the panel is only listed as Generic PnP Monitor. I haven't been able to find an INF or ICC for it. -
I had the Sharp LQ170M1LA2E on my M1730. I thought it had a pretty good picture and good response time. I could not find the specs anywhere though. The top row of pixels started flickering. I had Dell replace it. They replaced it with the LG.Philips LP171WU1. I am not sure if I god a bad one but this LCD has horrible backlight bleeding. I hardly noticed any on the Sharp, just a slight amount at the bottom. On the LG there are big patches of white at the bottom and in the middle when on dark screens. This is extremely annoying when watching a movie. The response time also seems quite a bit slower. It quite often appears as if someone is painting the image in from the back. There is also a purple blemish on the bottom left corner of the screen. Do you have backlight bleeding issues with your LG?
-
yes this lg is only a 6bit panel. and my lg has a small amount of light bleed as well very annoying but its far better than the samsung i had before
-
How do you pick which of the 2 screens you want? When I was building mine it says LCD PANEL 17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA
Any way to change that? -
Just wanted to update you guys. It seems the 177.83 drivers NVidia just released have made quite a noticeable improvement in the display quality on my LG panel. The only thing I had to do was set brightness to 40% (50% is the default), giving a much more accurate grayscale in the darker areas. I'm much more satisfied with the panel now and highly recommend checking the drivers out.
