    Hi,

My brother recently got the xps 1730m with vista home premium 32. Can he use the same CD key in the 32bit to install vista 64bit?

Dell wants 40 bucks for the Vista 64 DVD and I don't want to pay them.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi theres,

Yes you can use the same cd Key to install Vista 64bit. All you need to do is obtain a 64bit version of the OS, perhaps from a friend or something and then u can only do a fresh install of the 64bit OS. It won't let you do an upgrade from 32bit to 64bit.

    Cheers.

    Thanks Reborn.

Just making sure since I read some other websites that the Windows that is shipped out from dell (OEM) can't be used with other version of vista. In this case, the vista 32 key cannot be used on the 64.... only retail vista key will work on both version...

    Can you guys confirm this?

    Hi theres again,

no sorry if my reply was unclear.

The vista key you have now on the underside of your notebook Dell XPS M1730 can be used to install any either 32bit or 64bit versions of vista.
All you need to install vista 64bit is to obtain a 64bit vista DVD.
Its only because the dvd that dell shipped out with your brothers notebook is only 32bit that you are unable to install the vista 64bit version.
So if you can get a hold of a 64bit vista dvd (any version) since all vista dvds have all the versions on them anyway then u can use it to install vista 64bit whilst using the vista key that is found on the bottom of your brothers notebook.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers.

Isn't Dell supposed to provide 64bit for free?

Do some search and you should find one.

Dell will send you the 64-bit media for any version of Vista (Dell OEM of course). So if you have Vista Home Premium 32-bit which shipped with your Dell system, you can call them (Tech Support) and request (free of charge) the 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium.

The link below is a thread from Dell's support forums. There are detailed instructions about how to go about getting your 64-bit OS DVD in one of the posts.
