Hello!
First of all great forum, I have found a lot of useful information here![]()
I want to buy a new laptop from Dell, but I just cannot decide between the XPS M1530 or the Studio XPS 16.
I want to be able to play games on it that look good, like Warcraft, COD5, Source games like HL2. I'm not looking for something that will play well with maxed out settings, nothing close. Just a laptop that would do it smoothly while still looking good at maybe medium settings. I also need it for some university work like programming and other computer science related topics.
I am after having a terrible expierience with a HP pavilion dv2699ea special edition laptop. Recently it just got boiling hot, it was always very hot, but much hotter than normal now, you could not sit with it on your lap, the keyboard and mousepad and the area for resting your palms were just too hot to touch, and when I would be watching a dvd on it lately it actually shut itself down several times without explanation. Now the GPU has gone bust. Sometimes it produces no image on screen, or a distorted one, and it has made the laptop as slow as hell.
So I am getting a new laptop, and would rather not have a repeat of the HP inncident. I don't want it to get so hot it becomes untouchable or unusable like the HP.
So I am going between the M1530 and Studio 16. Which would any of you recommend? I have seen many for and against arguments here and I just can't decide so I thought I would ask for advice. Do they both have good cooling? Do they run very hot (does one run significently hotter than the other?) Do they perform well? I have seen many great MP1530 arguments and that is what I was leaning towards, yet I see many of you lusting over the Studio 16 in that big thread, so now I just don't know where to go!
So any advice would be very helpful and I would be most grateful for it!
Thank you in advance,
Michael.

I heard that the Studio XPS 16 also has a heat problem. I don't own one nor do I know anyone who does so I don't know how hot it actually gets.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I'd say neither the M1530 or SXPS 1640 have superb cooling systems. Both (when configured with their respective most powerful GPU) run fairly hot, as described in the respective NBR reviews. The SXPS 1640 does seem to do a bit worse, but recently a new vent has been seen on the SXPS 1640, which may drop the temps significantly.
I'd go for an M4400D) instead of either, but between the two, it'd be the SXPS 1640. I personally think the M1530 is of a higher quality build, but the Nvidia GPU in the 1530 has been crapping out left and right, whereas no one has reported any problems with the SXPS 1640 GPU (yet).

Thank you both for the tips!

I have the SXPS16 with P8600 and 256SSD.. the only time it gets noticeably warm is when i max out the CPU for a length of time. But, i only do that when im converting video files. For normal use, its fine. I dont play games on it, though.
In any case, you might want to look at a laptop cooler if you are going to be maxing your system out constantly. It will extend the life of the internal components no matter how well the cooling system is designed.
