Hi all, this problem occurred one day after playing some video games and my laptop must have randomly shut off. I tried to boot it but the screen was all defragmented and these random lines would appear. Maybe my graphics card broke due to overheating? Could someone help? It would be much appreciated.

I don't know what is causing that, but it's definitely GPU related. Maybe it did break, or maybe it's a loose cable between the GPU assembly and the LCD panel.

Either way, if you are within your warranty period, I would call Dell and get them to fix it.

    Hello DanxWang,

The issue may be with the video card on the computer. To isolate the issue, here are a few diagnostics steps that we can perform.

Let us first try running the hardware diagnostics to check if the computer able to turn on in diagnostics mode.

To run the hardware diagnostics, please turn the computer off. Then press and hold the FN button and then press the power button. This will start the computer in diagnostics mode. Please check what is displayed on the screen and if you see the diagnostics running, please make a note of any error message.

If you still have the same issue when the system is started in diagnostics, mode, please run the test on the LCD to make sure that the LCD is working fine.

To run the test on the LCD, please turn the computer OFF. Then press and hold the 'D' button and then press the power button. This will start the Built In Self-Test (BIST) for the LCD on the computer. You should see a series of colored screens when the BIST starts. Please check if the colored screens are displayed and the colored screens are clear without any vertical / horizontal lines.

I would also suggest you to connect an external monitor to the computer and check if you are able to get a display on the external monitor. You may need to press the FN + F8 key to toggle the display to the external monitor.
If the issue is same on the External monitor and if you get the colored screens during the LCD BIST, the issue may be with the video card and the motherboard on the computer need to be replaced.

I would request you to send me the service tag of the computer through a private message by clicking on my USER Name, so that I can assist you further in this issue.

Note: Please do not post your service tag / personal information on the public forum.
