The sound on my XPS1530 just cut out and I can't get it back, volume is on and not muted, however I still get sound through the headphone sockets.

I have tried to shut down and restart but that hasn't helped either.

Is it possible for the speakers to have broke? Machine is about 10months old.

    Any help appreciated.

    Steve

Has the unit been taken apart? If so, its possible the headphone jack is grounding out. I had this happen to a m1710 after the tech replaced a GPU.

The unit has never been taken apart.

I did call support and they want to try and see if its software issues by taking control of the laptop. If that doesn't work they said they will send an engineer out.

I know this isn't the case as the sound still works with headphones.

Battery also has given up in the last week. Only works for about 30mins, windows reports that it is near the end of its life, but its only 10 months old.

Sounds like an issue with the jack sensor that disconnects the speakers when using headphones.

It can't be that either as the sounds was working this morning from the speakers then it just cut out, I only plugged earphones in after to check the sound was still working.

Can be if the sensor that controls it takes a dump - I think it's controlled electronically rather than a simple connection being severed when you physically plug the jack in.

Try booting with a Linux live CD and see if anything changes. If it doesn't work then you know you have a hardware problem, if it does you know you have an OS problem.

I did and they almost were going to send someone out, but then he checked and I only have the collect and return warranty, however as there are a couple of things wrong he was going to check if they could just send out a technician to replace the speakers and change the battery.

Right I let Dell come to collect my laptop to take and repair.

However I have just realised, don't XPS laptops come with repair in home warranties? Although I did by from the refurb store, does that mean I just get the basic warranty instead?

    it wasnt software problems.

Dell did some checks and also I posted saying if I pressed the left speaker it worked a bit but was really crackly, right speaker totally dead and if I plugged in headphones sound worked perfectly.

Dell collected the laptop past week and it's getting sent back to me tomorrow.

Got my laptop back today and they replaced the motherboard and bottom casing, not sure why they replaced that part, maybe they damaged it.

Sound is now working again, however that have made a mess of the laptop, there are a few screws missing from the underside and part of the protective lips of the DVD drive is caught in the usb port, the stickers that were on the bottom for my Wi-Fi, bluetooth and stuff are now gone and the keyboard is really loose on the left and really moves up and down.

Should I call to complain about that stuff?
