I'm well into my third day of the Production->Boxing stage. Seems like a long time to box up my 1530. What's normal? How long did your laptop stay in the boxing phase?
-
Mine went instantly from building -> shipped after 12 hours. That was a 1330, but there shouldn't really be any difference.
Maybe you should call Dell. -
Totally normal. The average boxing stage for a M1530 is 3-4 days. Absolutely no need to panic or call Dell.
-
Your laptop was most likely built in Malaysia. The boxing stage is when they fly the laptops from Malaysia to the US. The time will vary because they wait until they have enough laptops ready to make the flight worthwhile.

Hey there....For me, back in 1/08, my 1530 took 2 days, in the boxing stage...at the end..it moved *rapidly*
Here is a really nice thread about the Stages of Production you may want to peruse!

Hope that helps!

Mine took 3 days, I wouldn't worry unless it takes longer than maybe 5 days...
-
wouldnt it be more logical that as soon as the system is ready for shiping that it takes the first flight out?
-
Thanks for the replies! My shipping had been upgraded to "overnight" so maybe when it does flip to shipped I'll get it the next day.
-
It costs Dell money to fly the laptops over here. They wait until they have enough ready to justify the cost of the flight -
They charter a whole aircraft to ship them over here so when they have enough to fill up the plane, yours will be on the first "Dell" flight out. I think they basically sell enough that the plane flies back and forth daily though so I don't think that is the issue.
-
Maybe that is how Dell does it, but im sorry to me that doesnt make sense. it would be much easier for dell to use third-party carriers. (even mail makes more sense) They should just ship all systems they have on the first flight to the USA. that would be much faster.. they could even have a contract with a shipping company (Fedex,DHL..etc) im sure such companies have daily flights to the US... that would be a lot cheaper as dells wouldnt have to charter a whole aircraft to ship its products..
I thought Dell had a factory in the US, Texas i think, shouldn't that cover some of the American market -
I am sure the way they are doing it is the cheapest way or else they would use another way. Like I said I believe the Dell flight is daily. None of Dell's laptops are made here AFAIK.
-
Dell has not assembled laptops on US soil for a long time now, all North American Dell laptop orders are processed at the malaysian facilities. The delay is most likely because the daily 747 cargo charter flight is full so orders have to wait for their spot on the flight.
For more information read the section on how Dell builds and ship laptops under question #3 in the Top 10 (now 18) questions about the M1530. The link is in my sig. -
OK.. im very surprised dell has shut down ALL US assembly lines. i thought they may still have at least a small one running. seems not..
and 25000 PCs daily 6days a week can only be brought in using an entire plane..OK.. now i understand..
My 1720 is made in Ireland, brought through European(rest of the world) sales.. but both my older 1705/9400 and 1505/6400 were made in Malaysia through US ordering process -
Quick update. It went to "Shipped" this morning! Estimated Delivery: tomorrow!
No Carrier/Tracking number yet. I'm in the Southeast US. Does Dell ship DHL or does the carrier vary?
-
When I called and inquired about my laptop earlier they only mentioned DHL, but when it went to Shipped status I got a Schenker tracking number. I'd guess DHL is their standard, but they might use other companies, too.
This is for Europe, though. -
I'm in South Carolina, and mine was sent via DHL. Best of luck!
Man... Boxing sure takes a long time!
