First of all, I'm a very satisfied Apple Customer since a decade now. I bought a few Macs now and before I did that I worked, for sure, with Windows (bad times) and Linux. During the last couple of years I do more and more image procession (DSLR/RAW, with Capture One Pro), I'm using the entire CC-Suite and Videoediting (Full HD for now, but only as a hobby).
As my actual Macbook (its 5 Years old now) is at the and of his life, I need to buy a new one. But I'm tired of waiting for a new release of the Macbook Pro. During Dell released their Skylake Update last Year, Apple didn't do anything. If I want a new Macbook Pro for the moment, i have to pay the same amount of money for a 1 Year old product with no TB3 (and so on). Okay, this is just a luxury problem, but its there.
I'm not a Windows hater. I like it since they released Version 10 and I have to work in the University with it. I also love MacOS but I'm not bound in chains.
From my point of view, only Dell is the real competitor. For example, most of the Thinkpad Displays are not bright enough and have no TB3.
First I thought go for the XPS 13 but after a while I think its best to take the 15" because is smaller then the 15" Macbook Pro more like a 14".
I'm working most of the time with one external Display. But i thought maybe it's great to have the 4k Internal Display for underway? Is the machine powerful enough to handle the 4k internal Display + (in the future) a 4k external Display together? I have no intention to play Games with it. For this I have a PS4.
What about PWM? Display Flickering (what I was reading) is a big concern for me.
I'm looking forward to your answers.

You will find yourself quite at home with the Dell XPS 15 4K 9550, coming from MacBook Pro.
The laptop has excellent build quality and has a premium feel to it.
There is no flickering issue with the 4K display.
Make sure you buy a new one so that you get an unit which is free from any quality issues which the earlier units might have suffered from.
- No flickering issue
- No BSOD issues
- No driver issues
- No sound issues
- No need to do clean install of Windows 10
With the Thunderbolt port, you could easily drive an external 4K monitor. And the 4K on-board screen is a beauty.
Before buying:
- Try to find good deals, there are many available. But again ensure you are getting newer stock. I bought from Dell directly with some good rebate.
- Go for the 4K, 512GB, 16GB RAM option as minimum
After buying:
- If not already bought as default, try to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro
- Replace default Windows trackpad software with Synaptics drivers
- Activate Bitlocker Encryption
- Enjoy!
So far, the only thing which slightly annoys me is the narrow Enter key. But I am getting used to it as well. -
I am in the process of changing from a MacBook Pro to a newly acquired 9550. Back in the Microsoft Vista days, Apple had a significantly compelling product. I don't think that is the case anymore.
PAPPL likes this.
Maybe it's time to say Apple goodbye and switch to Dell XPS?
