I will shortly be receiving a Dell XPS 17 (L701x). I intend to replace the installed 4GB of RAM with 8GB of Crucial memory, but I need to identify which Crucial modules are compatible with the L701x's motherboard.

The Del memory is 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM, but other than a Dell part number (370-15259) I have no other specification (such as latency, etc.) - the Dell site does not yet list upgrades for the L701x, a search of the Dell web site for 370-15259 gives no results, and the Crucial memory configurator does not yet recognise the 370-15259.

Can anyone suggest where I go from here?

    Many thanks.

You should be able to use any DDR3 laptop memory. 1333MHz is probably preferable, but 1066MHz should work, and the performance difference should be negligible.

The memory I have in my xps 14 (and every dell and alienware I've ever had lol) is 1333 for i7 and 1066 for i5, the memory has always been cas 7 no matter what speed and usually Samsung.

As Commanderwolf said any 204 pin ddr3 will work, but ideal would be 204 pin cas 6 or 7 1333.

1333 only comes in CAS 9. 1066 is CAS 7. 1333 for quad i7, 1066 for dual i3/5/7. Besides that, they're all the same.

I am running a 2GB and 4GB 1333mHz RAM plus 4GB 1066mHz stick that I had bought for my 1640. Since the 1640 went back I put the RAM to use in my XPS 17. Everything runs smooth :)

Many thanks for the advice and reassurance.

I can now see my Crucial options - a 4GB kit for £40, or an 8GB kit for £82 (compared with a premium of £329 if I had specified 8GB instead of 4GB when I ordered the XPS 17!!!).

I'm considering installing a Crucial 8GB kit in slots A and B, and keeping the Dell 4GB kit and installing it in slots C and D. Am I right in assuming that that should give full dual channel operation for all the memory?
