Is anyone regretting their xps purchase after hearing about the new microsoft surface book laptop? I have only had my xps for about a month. For the most part, I am enjoying it. It has its quirks. Now, barely a month after purchasing, I'm reading about the new microsoft surface book and it looks like a beast! I know that the specs on paper don't always mean much and the true test will be after its officially released to the public, but its making me question my xps purchase.

The Microsoft Book is a different class of product, intended for people with different needs than your ideal XPS buyer.

If you think of the Microsoft Book as a laptop that can convert into a tablet, then it competes with the Lenovo Yoga lineof products

If you think of the Microsoft Book as a tablet that can convert into a laptop, then it competes with the Microsoft Surface.

The Dell XPS 13 is an ultrabook laptop. It's a different class of product. So no, I dont regret or desire a Microsoft Book at all, since I never desired a Lenovo Yoga or Microsoft Surface type of device.

I was kinda regret buying the XPS at the first place... but only before I saw the Surface Book price.

The Surface Book aims at professional users which need power in a very mobile device.

The drawback of this is in the price.

The surface book seems to beat the xps on paper in almost all specs. 16 gigs of ram. 1 TB of storage. Nvidia graphics card. 6th gen Intel processor. Add the surface pen and the ability to detach and use as a tablet, it seems like an awesome machine.

It's 25% thicker than the XPS 13, almost a full pound heavier than the XPS 13, and gets really mediocre battery life.

    Color me unimpressed.

    It's more of a competitor to a Lenovo Yoga convertible tablet, than a non-convertible non-tablet xps 13

The Surface Book could compare to the XPS 12, where the XPS gets beaten down on specs. The XPS 12 does have a higher resolution though.
Personally I would go with a Surface Pro 4 for Mobility and the XPS 15 with 3 GB of RAM for power. That is if I had the money.

Not that I'm playing favorites, but don't pretend that a pound is heavy (especially considering that it's a 15 inch book). And since when is 12 hours mediocre battery life? Compared to the XPS 13's 15 hours, maybe, but don't forget how most people on here talk about how their XPS doesn't come close to 15 hours on regular use.

If you're not interested, you're not interested, but don't exaggerate "flaws".

A pound isn't heavy when you're talking about carry-weight in a backpack. But it matters on ultrabooks, which try and squeeze down in size & weight as much as possible. You can question WHY people want light laptops. I wouldn't have an answer for you, because a lot of it comes down to the individual opinions and references of the laptop buyer. But for a laptop design (ultrabook) that intentionally tries to get the weight down as much as possible, a pound could be as much as 35% - 40% of the overall laptop weight.

As for battery life, you are right. I misread battery life, where mediocre (3 hours) was for the undocked tablet. Docked tablet & keyboard actually claims 15 hours of life, which is fantastic.
