i had the first XPS. i think at first it was called inspiron XPS, but then it was referred to as generation 1. the generation 2 was the first one with the lights. my wife is still using my old gen 2. it was renamed M170 once the geforce 7800 came out.

so m170 is the first of the Gen 2 XPS books. I wanted one of these really bad when they came out first. My workplace would not allow me to use one. only had 2 "supported" notebooks....DOH.

I would like to get one for a second/third notebook.

Not a bad system at all... I had a Gen 1 that I sold before I bought my M1730... I was happy that it was a notebook that would play Stalker at moderate settings, and it'd do it just fine.

If you have the budget, try going for an M1710. IIRC, the design is pretty much identical, and the 1710's got more modern hardware. I personally like the 1710's design metter than the M1730, but since the M1730 has the major edge in hardware I went for that.
