So before my initial thread got derailed, a couple of people wanted to know my final config for the system I ordered.

    Studio XPS 1640
    Intel Core 2 Duo T9800(2.93GHz/1066Mhz FSB/6M L2 Cache)
    4GB, DDR3, 1067 MHz 2 Dimm
16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p FullHD RGBLED LCD W/2.0 MP
    ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3670 - 512MB
500GB 7200RPM Free Fall Sensor Seagate Hard Drive
    BluRay Combo Drive
Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11 AGN Half Mini Card w/ My WiFi
    Additional 9-cell Battery

That plus it came with 3 years warranty/in-home service/accidental damage protection/lojack, with tax and shipping ran me just under 2k. Good price?

On an aside, I'll be using this machine for audio recording and I was a little nervous when I started reading about the audio latency issue. However, it appears to be fixed with the latest BIOS, so we'll see. I'm hoping.

The excitement of everyone ordering the SXPS 13/16..is making me want to do the same....And, shame on Dell! They just increased my credit limit! :p
They tease so badly when they know you are *itching* for a new lappy!

My EDD is 6/24 for the 9-cell battery, and 7/1 for the notebook. Placed my order on June 8. Apparently the 500 gb 7200 rpm drive delayed my order by one week, but it was worth it as it was only a 50 dollar upgrade over the 320.

I'm already very happy I went with this over the Lenovo W500 I was looking at.

Keeping my fingers crossed, hope it doesn't get delayed any further. What is everyone's experience with Dell's estimated delivery date? Are they usually pretty accurate?

Not bad! On, the ESD...Dell usually *over projects* that, to protect from production delays as such! There is a good chance it will ship before the ESD.

Be sure to check your order status via phone: 800-433-9014, it's always more accurate then your online account with Dell. And, you can always call a Rep, for more detailed information!

When you order a lappy and separate accessories, the accessories tend to ship before the lappy!

    Hope that helps you!

    Cin ;) :)

Thank you for all of your help, it certainly does.

One thing that does concern me a bit is that my order does not show up in My Account page. Says no recent orders to display. However, when I go to check my order status and physically enter the number in, I get to the order status page. Shipping address and Billing information is unavailable though as it says "N/A" for both, however the order is in production. I used my DPA, and also I went through the EPP page to get the student discount, so I believe that is what is causing the lack of info. My DPA was charged the amount though, so i think I'm ok, seems to be just an issue with linking my account to an order placed on the EPP site. I hope.

nice nice. when u mentioned the w500 that reminded me of some of the deals my school offered with lenovo. where you going?

i think i'm going to use it for class, but if it is too big to carry around, i think i may get a cheap netbook like the mini 10 for class. would be super easy to carry around and it wouldnt be as distracting as the xps haha. you could just hook it up to an external and transfer anything you need.

Not to be a downer, but I ordered almost the same specs and ordered on 5-20 with an EDD of 6-18. Today my EDD was updated to 7-10 so I called and was told the 2.93 intel chips were the cause and soonest it will be in would be next week. So good luck to BOTH of us! :)

Well, I hope I can give you some good news today.

My laptop has shipped as of today, according to the website. My EDD from the very beginning was 7/1, however it is now 6/17! :) It says today was the ship day, so I figure tomorrow I'll be receiving the tracking information. So awesome

Thought it would ship well before your ESD! :D
Yes, tomorrow you can get further info... :)

However, you may be able to go to fedex.com,
    Go to: http://www.fedex.com/us/
Then: Track (from the tab at the top) > Dropdown > Then *Track By Reference: https://www.fedex.com/AltRefTracking?cntry_code=us

Enter your Order Number (as reference), then your *Destination Country*, and *Postal Code*..hit submit..and hopefully you can get some tracking info & number!

Thats awesome! I checked mine but it is still in production. The only difference between yours and mine is I chose 6 gig of ram. (and ordered 5-20) So who knows. When I called they said it was the processor that was delayed but someone else said they heard it was the 7200 rpm HDD. Personally I wonder if they just roll dice to see which system to build?
Let us know how it goes!! Wish me luck guys!

wow! congrats on the shipping. That's unbelievably quick, especially if you were expecting an additional 1 week delay (for the 500gb @ 7200). You should probably have it in your hands in just a few days :D

Thanks for your help! Just as I was about to check the Dell order site for the order number, it was updated with a FedEx tracking number, however it is not in the system as of yet. Should be by tomorrow I assume!

On another note, my 9-cell battery, which I assumed was shipping before the notebook, is still in production. I was hoping I would have it before so that I could prop up the notebook and not have it get too hot. So I'm going to be getting a notebook cooler. Which one would you recommend? I've read through the topics and people have been recommending either the Zalman NC-2000 or the NZXT Cryo LX. Which one do you think would work better?

For me, personally I would go with the Zalman NC-2000. Both are great. But I just prefer the Zalman brand.

I think this is nice for the 1640!!! :) Zalman always has such great reviews.

The Batt' will prolly go out of production quickly now..that your lappy has shipped..I'm quite surprised it didn't ship before! ;)

Yes, I would say you will have further shipping info by at least 10am tomorrow morning! :)

Thank you, I'll be ordering the Zalman in a few days.

As you said, tracking info appeared at about 10 am this morning local time. And not only that, but they also shipped my battery, and it looks like i'll be getting both on the same day. Dell has really impressed me with their shipping.

FEDEX says it will be here Wednesday. However, I'm not sure anyone will be home to sign for it. Do you think I could just leave a note on the door with my signature and instructions to leave it by a side door, and that will be OK?

I believe you can do that, call them first..800-463-3339 (is that scary I know that number by heart)

Also, if you cannot be home to receive it during the day, you can pick it up in the evening from their Depot. :D

(I did that when receiving my 1530 and my Mini 9) :D

Mine is still sitting in production. But being bored out of my mind waiting I have been reading other groups on here and I read someone say they were told those that ordered a TV tuner were delayed because the sku was wrong so they had to ship seperately and it put the laptop back in production. So maybe that was why I was delayed still?
Did you get your computer yet?

Posting from it now. First impressions: wow. This might be the best looking notebook I've ever owned. The pictures on the web don't do it justice, this system is NICE. This is my first Vista experience, I've been holding off on installing it on any of my systems due to the compatibility and whatnot. So far, I'm liking it. It's a lot flashier. The UAC warnings are a bit annoying and excessive, though.

I didn't find too much crapware to get rid of, however there are a lot of processes running that I'd like to get rid of. Is there anywhere removal guide for this machine? I found a clean install guide, however I'm not interested in reinstalling Vista, only getting rid of some of the excess.

And also, yes it runs a bit warm. I haven't downloading anything yet to monitor my temps...any suggestions? It's been on for about an hour now and it's only slightly warm among the bottom, nothing crazy like everyone was suggesting though.

No, customer service is useless, just read scripts to me... so I dont call. When I call the "back door" number to the old phone system that gives you more info it just says "In build status"
So yes, I watch unboxing vids and read everyone elses reviews a lot!! :D
Glad you like it! So many picky people talking about fingerprints  makes you begin to worry if I ordered too soon. But I will wait a little more. I'll probably cancel if they delay me again.

Ok... heres the update. On friday I got a notice that my laptop was DELAYED AGAIN!!!! Till the 17th of July! Needless to say I canceled! But what made it worse was I was on the phone for 45 minutes trying to cancel and kept getting transferred and hung up on! They were so unhelpful! ON PURPOSE! I guess they figure you wont cancel if it takes too long. I was so upset I swore I'd buy elsewhere! But after looking everywhere I saw I wouldnt find one I'd like as much :(
But then I realized my problem was that I needed too many upgrades BUT wanted it in a reasonable time. SO I looked at the ALREADY MADE models in the OUTLET!!!!! :D And got the same computer but with one step down on the processor AND SAVED $1000!!!! SO now I am happy again and I get it Tuesday!! YAY!
Anyone get a refurb? I hope they are ok?

Sorry for your prob's you went thru with the delays on your order.. :(

At least you were able to find a cheaper one thru the Outlet, thus saving you even more $$...
