    Hello,

Basically my 1640 laptop has worked perfectly pretty much constantly plugged into the mains for two weeks but now I have to charge it while switched off and then take the charger out when I switch it on, because otherwise the laptop just powers off after a minute of loading up Windows 7...

Also if I try to plug in the charger randomly then it just powers off.

I'm guessing there's some sort of problem with the charger maybe but if anyone could help I'd be very grateful - thanks!

Thanks for replying! Yeah it's really weird, I tried a new charger and also reverted to Vista but same problem. What have you done about it?

Oh and it seems to be able to load into the BIOS and stay on so what does that suggest?

Dell support says for battery and power cord problems flash the bios even if you have a010 and it will fix it. I don't know if this works they just decided to send me a new battery.

I'm not sure if it's battery/power cord, it could be internal..

Also how can I flash a new BIOS without booting into Windows? :(

Go to this website http://www.bootdisk.com/ look under the Bootable disk header and it says something like flash bios with no os. Make sure you click the link that says Read First before you start. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the help, in the end it turned out to be a problem with the motherboard and eventuallyyyyyyyyy(!) Dell sent a technician to replace it.

    Woop!
