i just discovered this recently after running left 4 dead on my computer. every 5-10 min when playing the game, everything would slow down and become a slide show for about 10-20 seconds before returning back to normal. i assume this is because of my GPU/CPU becoming too hot and they were downclocked to prevent damage to the motherboard. do i need to be worried?

I had the same problem while playing graphics intensive games also. I replaced the dell stock thermal compound with mx-2 and that shaved off a few degrees. I also raise the rear of my laptop to allow more airflow into the vent and my gpu no longer gets hot enough to downclock.

Clean the fans and intake/exhaust vents of dust if you havent. Thats the only thing you should do before contacting Dell. It should be done quite regularly and in extreme cases (ie when totally clogged with months worth of dust) can definitely make a huge difference.

If that doesnt work, definitely contact Dell.

i give up trying to clean up this man the retardedly small screws on the back of my laptop wont even want to get out. so i used a blow dryer to blast at the vents but nothing came out either. i guess im just gonna give dell a ring and ask them to replace my motherboard and at the same time my defective gpu is fixed. :(

    Whoa 91'C ?

You have gotta be careful. As a comparison, my temperature only got up to 78'C using Cooler Master Notepal Infinite cooling pad and its summer time in Australia.

    Call dell up :)

had the same problem, my m1530 even turned off after an hour of intensive playing any recent graphicly advanced game - crysis, GTA4, mass effect even if I raise the back of the laptop so it doesn't suck warm air from the hot table... so they replaced my motherboard and...... it didn't help :( :( :( :(
so it may be a faulty sinkheat too or I didn't know what else could cause it
didn't call them since though but soon I will if it doesn't stop

I had pretty much similar temperatures to the OP's about 2 weeks ago playing the exact same game. I contacted tech support and they made me run some diagnostics from the BIOS and stuff. When I told him that everything had passed he told me to update the BIOS, at which point I told him i was running the latest version. He told me he would ship a new motherboard out.

Well, the dell tech came and put in the new motherboard, but my touchpad stopped working. I showed him some pictures of my temperatures while he was on the phone with Dell and they sent a new palm rest and a new CPU. Temps now get to about 75 celsius max and my palm rest is brand new. :3

The point is that you should get the motherboard replaced, but if you elect to mention your high CPU temps as well, they might send you a new processor along with a new motherboard. Dell's really good with customer service/support and you should really take advantage of it, especially if you paid for a 2 or 3 year warranty.
