Hi everyone I am new to this forum but am very familiar with the m1530 issues. I know there are tons of posts about gpu failing and trust me i've combed through them like monkeys picking for ticks. So here is my story...
My problems started last year when i first received my laptop I would play a game and then the computer would shut its self off after bout 40 min of decent gaming. I called dell up and they said it was a software issue and that i would have to reinstall windows. So I didn't really do that, cause I had a desktop at the time, and just used the xps as a email, browsing etc. comp. I just recently moved to Texas and the xps became my primary computer again so I decided to do a fresh install of windows 7 on it. Of course the games would continue to shut it off and then on top of that my battery stopped charing, bios issue, but dell came out and replaced the mobo. The tech came out the next day, I was so pleased, and fixed it. Then after 45 min of gaming my screen froze, got all colorful and the laptops shutdown and didn't turn on again. I once again called dell and they sent out the same 'ol chap, Rusty was his name (nice guy), and he told me about the nvidia gpu issue and how they weren't planning a recall or anything. At that I hoped the ceo of nvidia would get ball cancer from the heat radiated from his damn gpu's, no offence to those who have testicular cancer, but instead i decided to play a little crysis. So I game for a bit runs great and then of course it overheats again, and i must say that the game slowed down to a crawl many times during decently turbulent game play, i'm assuming the gpu is downclocking itself for heat purposes. Anyways so i call dell again and they now claim its a software issue and they want me to call a different support and PAY, i'm still under warranty, for service. I assure him i have the latest drivers and so he finally caves in and tells me to run a hardware test. I did that and it has no issues according to it, but i still cant play even less demanding games like fable I! So how do I get the dell guy to believe that its a hardware issue if i can't prove it until i run it for a little time, and I am well aware that he knows its a hardware issue...if that made sense. Thanks in Advance!

Can you post your specs and warranty so I can get an idea of where you stand? I'm actually setting up the 1640 they just sent me as a replacement for my 1530, so I've had experience with this and I'll edit my chat conversation and post it eventually to give you an idea of how I handled it.
-
ya for sure here are my specs:
T8300 2.4 ghz Core 2 duo
256 8600 GT
4 gb ram
1440x900 display
8x dvd-rw
windows vista (upgraded to 7)
320 Gb hd
bluetooth etc.
those are all the main features of it. -
I had almost a same issue like u. when DELL released 1530 first time(2007), i bought my machine. but after a couple of month my media touch button was not working properly. i had to press hard to get them work. anyway, after being called to them they changed that media panel. but media panel's lights were not glowing as they were suppose to do. they again changed it but still remained same. they changed mob couple of time as well. however, according to this issue, when i was just on 11month of warranty they said they will replace my whole laptop. and they did with upgraded processor. i had core 2duo 2.2 but i got replaced one 2.5. amazing!!! isn't it?
whatsoever, i was using this laptop without any problem (i should mention that i don't play game, even those card or cheese game let alone hd games), by the way, the media panel's lights glowing were the same dim. but i didn't complain again thinking this that they might have changed something from the production. whatever, i did install a 3d screen saver and since then problem started, i was keep gettong BSOD every on and off. i did test my RAM (as i bought 4gb ram from ebay),found error. so changed the RAM scanned back with memtest, but didn't get any error. still the BSOD problem exist. meanwhile my warranty finished (22nd Nov 2009). i checked BSOD report and found that most of them were coming from nVidia. then i was searching this forum and came to know that nvidia company has extended one year warranty. so dell took away my machine to repair it and finally returned it 20days letter. but this time i can't even run the machine for 20mnts even. so they refunded my money and took the system back according to their sells law in the uk. i m so happy and ordered Studio1557 with i7 processor, 1gb ati 5470 graphics card.
But i missed that nicely designed machine with remote control. i used to love that remote control. it's very pity that they are not doing any more remote. don't know why???
NB: sorry for my long story but it might help some one else to think what to do in this kind of situation. -
@nealloy They still do the remote but it's on certain systems only, like the XPS 16. I believe the express card slot on the 1557 is a smaller one than the XPS 16's, so it probably doesn't fit the dell remote. I understand your pain though, that remote is useful.
@ Paparishi90, I'm so not surprised the Dell rep. lied to you by telling you that it was a software issue (twice) when it was the farthest thing from that. It was always the 8600m gt overheating. That thing caused me so many heating problems when I had it. Someone appropriately named the thing a "toaster" and rightly so...From my tests when I had the lappy the thermal threshold was 95 C. So when it hit that temp, which it always did weeks after a GPU/Mobo/Heatsink replacement (had 3 total), my games would slow down as the GPU was being throttled to save itself from burning up. Dell...they'll still lie to your face even when the problem has been well documented. You can only imagine what they tell to users that aren't tech. savvy and actually believe its a software issue (spending all that time re-installing one's OS when that's not even the fix...)
Well here's how I got rid of my toaster (the one in my kitchen was sufficient):
, but the fact that he called them there with me helped a lot. I would suggest you call Dell support and complain. Speak to them sternly and express your anger (though don't over-dramatize and don't be rude). Tell them its "seriously hurting your productivity and that you don't want this system anymore" Hopefully those magic words should do something substantial for you as they did for me. It helped me get the replacement XPS 1645 in my sig (a LOT better specs than the 1530). I hope you're still under warranty though, as you need that to even be considered?
-
paparishi90 had exactly the same issue, hence i stopped playing games in my 1530. Last game i played on it was call of duty modern warfare2 and i couldnt last an hour on it. My 1530 would shut itself down. I kept on shutting down that my HDD got hit by bad sectors, luckily dell happily replaced it. i dont think you can do much anything on this issue of 1530. As EDU mentioned, get it replaced if the issue is giving you headaches.
-
Hi E.D.U. did u mean XPS1645 by XPS16? i had that machine for a week. and i checked the express card slot. it does fit the remote control though but remote doesn't work with that machine. i tried with my XPS remote. i also asked DELL's sells representative, he said they don't do remote any more. anyways, i sent that machine back to them as i didn't like the small fonts and icons because of high resolution (1080p) and in vista its tremendously small.
-
Honestly, I think Dell lied to you about the remote, like they tried to lie to me. I called them shortly after I received my XPS 1645 (2 weeks ago) to request the remote, because I had it on my M1530. At first the guy quickly said there is no remote for the thing anymore. I wasn't going to believe that, so I stressed again that I had it for my M1530 and that I knew 1645 had it. He put me on hold (to do whatever it is they do when they do that) and then came back and told me he'd send it. I got it the next day and it's a newer version (black with the Windows media Center symbol) than the m1530 one. I had to reinstall the infrared driver for mine to work, so I think it will work. Personally, I believe those Dell techs. love to tell customers false info. just to get rid of them. It's as though that's their motto: "Get rid of customer as fast as possible, and by any means, just try not to make it too obvious" ...lol. -
Thank you guys for your responses and I too am getting a replacement! I was fed up after the last time it turned off on me so I sent unresolved issues this irritated but professional email on Sunday:
Dell,
I purchased a computer a little over a year ago and have had issues with it since day one. When I first received the laptop I initially purchased it for its ability to handle graphic intensive software such as games, video editing and other graphic intensive software. I initially had issues last year when my laptop would shut down after a short use of these programs. When I called Dell Tech Support they told me to install a fresh copy of Vista because it might be a software issue. At the time I had a desktop and so I used this laptop occasionally for email and word processing. Recently I have moved to Texas and I have not had the luxury of having a desktop as a backup computer. Using this as my primary computer once again I started running into many of the same issues along with new ones. My laptop stopped charging the battery one day and so dell replaced the motherboard and the hard drive, because the hard drive failed the hardware test. Only a little after it was fixed I loaded up a game and maybe 15 minutes into it my laptop shut off and would not turn on again, the tech determined it was a graphics card issue and I had my graphics card replaced. I attempted to play once again and it would shut down the computer after a short while of use. It also did this when I used any of designing software for my school work. I called tech support again and they assured me it was a software issue, once again. I double checked all my drivers and software updates, which were up to date, and found nothing. I continued to use my laptop as is and it continued to crash after graphics use. Today I was using my laptop and it shut off, thinking that it was just another crash I turned it back on a few minutes later. I saw a few colored lines on the screen at startup and then it shut down again and has not turned on since. Since my computer failures have began I have missed three assignments that I cannot make up. These laptop issues have begun to affect my academics and have not been properly addressed by Dell. I as a consumer have done my part by purchasing your product and now you must fulfill your duty to provide me with the reliable and capable device that I was promised at purchase. I was told that Dell had an excellent product and warranty service and that is the reason that I had chosen it. I would like my issue to be resolved permanently and I no longer have time to gamble with a failing product.
hopefully this helps out those who need help resolving their prolonged issues. They have approved me for a replacement system but I'm not sure what they are going to replace it with yet. I'm assuming a 1640 but i'm not 100%. They did reply within a couple of days so I was pleased with that but like everyone said keep it cool and they will take care of it for the most part... -
and E.D.U. how the hell did you get a core i7 processor with a RGB led?
-
Congrats
!! I'm happy for you. Well done paparishi90. That was nicely worded and expressed everything you needed to express. I personally hope you get either a 1645 or a 1647. The 1640s don't have the best heating and tend to get a little hotter that the other two, but that's not too much of a biggie. What are your current specs. on your M1530? They have to at least match or give you better than what you currently have. Now you just have to play the waiting game a little, though I got mine in like 3 business days, so you might be lucky to not have to wait too long. Though some people have waited the maximum 2-3 weeks for theirs. I believe the longer you wait, the more likely it is that you get a new system. I got a refurb.(green sticker on bottom), which maybe explains the short time but honestly this thing is essentially brand new.
-
My current m1530 has:
320 gb 5400 rpm hd
1440x900 res screen
256mb 8600 GT
4 GB of ram
2.4 GHz Core 2 duo
9 cell battery
DVD RW
they even threw in the space heater feature for free!
they said the process will take aroud 4-5 weeks... which seems kind of irritating and that is about it.
a 1645 or a 1647 would be ideal for sure... now I have heard that the 8600GT is better than the 3000 series ATI card and so I should push for the 4670 instead... but i was also reading that ATI uses a mix of GDDR3, DDR3, and DDR2 ram for their 4670 which seems kinda questionable as well especially in reguard to speed.
Essentially what minimum specs should I push for and what do you think I could get as a little icing for my inconvenience. Since I don't have a blu-ray drive I don't have that much leverage but hopefully I can get an RGB led... that is what I'm really stoked about. Also do they exchange out the m1530's for m1530's still because that would most definatly dampen my spirit.
E.D.U. you are no doubt absurdly lucky!
You must have sacrificed many small goats for the gods to favor you that much... -
Yes, push for the 4670. It's a lot better than the 3670. I don't know if Dell does the mix thing, but then again I wouldn't be surprised. (If it helps I got the GDDR3). Despite that, which ever memory the 4670 gets, it will still be a lot better than the 3670. I'm sure you'll get all your current specs upped, but the usual trouble points are the graphics card (4670 vs 3670), the screen (RGB vs WLED), and the battery (9 cell vs 6 cell), which is usually easiest to rectify. As "icing" push for the RGB (this is if you don't get it in the first place and if you get the 4670). If you don't get either, first push for the 4670 (on the basis of the 3670 being worse than the 8600), and your icing should still be the RGB. Hopefully it all works out well without any need for talk on your part.
LOL, don't worry you ain't getting an M1530. I was scarred of the same thing. Just make sure they don't try to throw an Inspiron 15 at you telling you it's just as good as your m1530 (refuse that strongly). I believe you'll either get a 1640 or 1645 (crossed fingers for the latter).
4-5 weeks is a lot, I'm confident you'll get it before. But like I said before, the longer it takes the more likely it is that you are going to get a new one, as they might be building it (I'm not too sure of my hypothesis though).
I sacrificed some massive cows to get this.... Nah, no cows or goats here. I was honestly walking on air (and still am) the whole day when I found out. I thank God, as I was completely clueless about the whole exchange thing even before the dell tech arrived that faithful day (Jan 29). I really hope you meet the same luck, and don't let them cheat you. Tell us your XPS 16XX specs when you get them so we can help you decipher it.

Whats the difference between RGB and WLED guys? well, E.D.U after receiving the refund i ordered for SXPS1645 with corei7(1.6ghz),1080p but as i was sooo upset with the fonts and icons specially after installing vista, i sent that machine back and then ordered for STUDIO1557 with same processor and 512mb ATI, 720p. but within a couple of days of receiving the laptop my Optical drive stopped working. and meanwhile DELL has given some offers over the same machine. like 1gb ATI Graphics card instead of 512mb, 500gb hdd instead of 320gb and also free option to choose the color which would normally cost me £29. so i spoke with the dell technician and requested him to refund me money, thus i got my money back and 18th of Feb, i ordered another STUDIO1557 with following configuration.
\ Previous STUDIO1557 Configuration which i sent back
Intel Core i7 Processor 720QM(1.60GHz,6MB cache)
Display : 15.6in 1366X768 Black \ Midnight Blue
Memory : 4096MB (2x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
Hard Drive : 500GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM) \320GB
Graphics : 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5470 graphics card \512MB ATI 4570
Wireless : Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/g/n) Half Mini Card
Wireless : Europe Dell Bluetooth 370 Card
85 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)
Keyboard : Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Backlit Keyboard
Operating System : English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
Price: £782.66(Include everything) which is equivalent to 1,209.90 USD \ 783.39
I m still waiting for this machine. but previous 2machines i received within 6 business days.i m really dying to see my new machine and can't wait to dual boot(Vista Ultimnate & Win7 Ultimate). guys got any idea what could b my Windows Experience Index rating or 3D Banchmark06 rating? -
Well, it seems I'm in the same boat only with my M1330:
After the requisite 3 total rebuilts (MoBo, heat silk, screen etc) and numerous othe 'minor' issues (oh, and the constant overheating frying a new an dpersonally ungraded HDD last year) when it once again started slowing, crashing, BSOD I called and quickly (too quickly?) I was given a dispatch and approval # for a replacement XPS 1340. Which right about then disappeared from the Dell website (here in the US at least, I hear it is still an option here and there around the world).
Now after 20 days they tell me they will actually send me a Studio 1458 and are earnestly trying to convince me it's an upgrade. Well, in some aspects it would be, in absolute terms - after all I bought my M1330 in the summer of 2007, the month of its launch so things have developed since then. But I paid for the newest and most advanced light notebook Dell had to offer then which after all the academic discounts cost me $1500 and the Studio 14 now starts at $599. So in my mind at least no comparison there.
I want a replacement but can't imagine what I should insist on (with the SXPS 13 gone and the 16 too big, and the Studio 14 totally unappealing) and what is likely to come. A full refund would be nice but is in the unlikely to impossible category - that seems to happen to the UK guy mostly from what I read on this forum.
So here I am waiting for Dell to call with the next round of nebulous promises.
My M1330 in its original configuration (upgraded in RAM and HDD since) was T5250 @1.50GHz, 1GB RAM, 120 GB HDD, NVIDIA 8400 GS, LED 13.3 WXGA -
As for the differences between the screens, I'm sorry I can't give you an "under the hood" analysis, but I'm sure a quick search can probably explain better. However, I can give you my qualitative opinion. The RGB is very vibrant and colors have this "pop" about them. You have to see it to understand really. Now, that's not to say that the WLED is not good (I'm guessing that's what you had?), as many have said it's very good (I can really only speak for the RGB). The RGB does use more power though, if that's something that you take into consideration.
WEI rating is really always up in the air, as it's not the most consistent rating/benchmarking system. As for 3D 06 you checked NBC? Looks like an average of 4028.
. Don't let them throw anything at you, as Dell likes to do that sometimes. Then again they've pulled the XPS13s for some reason...I would suggest sending unresolved issues an e-mail, explaining your feelings and current situation, then see what they do about it.
-
I read that someone here was replaced with a dell adamo from their m1330. It's the only thing really comparable as far as price and versatility goes. Initially they were issued the alienware 11x but clearly it looks much more gaudy than the m1330 and its a lot heavier. So tell them that you essentially purchased a top of the line product at the time and would expect the build quality to be the same. By replacing it with a low level product that you are not recieving the build quality that you would see in other products. Don't directly say hey I want an adamo but attack the replacements until their only option is to provide you with that laptop.
some points on each product may be:
the studio laptops features and keyboard may be inferior as well as chassis design and overall quality (using plastic instead of metal, etc.)
components inside the product
etc.
I'm not sure if they use different components for the same features but as a consumer you should be under the assumption of "you get what you pay for" even though it may or may not be true. good luck and make sure you express your frustrations in a non-threatening manner because people do not respond positively to aggression.
Good luck! -
my order has been shipped... kinda pisses me off though because I asked them multiple times to confirm the order with me before shipping, everything seems nice, from what i can interpret but still not sure what gpu I have, and I guess I have no RGB LED

You should really be happier about that system, you can't expect Dell to buy you a brand-new Bentley too. I know many people that have waited longer than you have and didn't get specs as good as those. Your monitor, I'm guessing, will be the Full-HD WLED one. In regards to the graphics, all 1645s and 1647's contain the ATI 4670 cards.
-
Good-looking specs. you got there paparishi90.
. You got the Core i7-720QM, 4GB RAM, 320Gb 5400 RPM HDD, Win7 Home Premium 64 Bit, WLED 1920x1080, and, I think the 4670. The second to last spec says M96, which is the model number for the 4670. 1645 is also better at handling heat than the 1640, so Congrats.
ADDED: As for them calling you and confirming specs. before your replacement ships...it's all bull. They told me the same thing, and before I could even say "OK, I'll be expecting your call," the system was at my door steps (which in retrospect was a good thing). Thankfully it all worked out, and you really got a pretty good system there...no joke. Just call for the 130W Adapter (and dell remote) when it arrives (just say your 90W is a hazard as it gets too hot), and you're good. -
@BLiT don't get me wrong I am estatic about the specs they are sending me and how quickly my problem is being taken care of, I live 5 min away from the dell warehouse from which it is shipping from, but I there is nothing wrong with crossing my fingers for an RGB led and a new Bently if Dell (would be so kind)!
@E.D.U. ya i'm uber stoked with the i7 but am a little concerned about the throttling issue that there were many rumors about, did they do a bios fix or something on that yet??? -
Yea, I edited my last post a little bit as you were typing
but I'll elaborate a little here. They issued BIOS Update A07 in mid-February (for which you'll still need a 130W adapter to take full advantage of; read my last post). It improved the throttling issue to the point that it's much better, but it's not complete. Some say it still throttles on really high loads, (Furmark + Prime) which honestly, it shouldn't. Some are scared it will throttle again when more demanding games are released in the future. But, generally most seem to be happy. I will reserve judgment on my feelings at the moment
. There is also the issue of GPU throttling when the GPU temps. hit 84C, but those are not due to the CPU throttling. We shall see if Dell increases that limit or improves the vent design (which is blocked by the screen
). I would really like both those fixes as the heat from the vent directed at the screen doesn't seem like it'll be good in the long run.
However, you shouldn't really feel too bad, as you are getting the thing as a replacement. It's a really fantastic laptop otherwise. The i7 is a sweet processor and the laptop is fast, nice-looking, and well built (despite the few blatantly obvious flaws).
-
Dell should give me a Bentley for making me wait 8 weeks... (Or either, we'll team up on them and share it!) >=D
Actually, I'd be happy with an extension on my warranty... which I might try to push for. -
For sure if not like I said Dell is not so far from me and we could most def perform a sit in till our demands are met I mean all I really want is a quarter of a million dollar car, now is that asking for too much.
On a more serious note, 8 weeks is absurd, you should most definatly be entitled to something. I'm sure you have already done this, but send another email to unresolved issues emphasizing on how detrimental not having a laptop is to your work, school, etc. They will respond because dell does not like unhappy customers especially ones that are young and still in school, which they want to put a good impression on because they have a long life ahead and are most probably going to earn a stable income. I don't even know why it would take that long. -
My plan is this: I have a second battery for my M1530 that tech support isn't going to replace since I don't have an order number for it. When I receive the laptop, I'll contact tech support via online chat and ask about the media remote (my 1530 had one, my 1640 should get one) and an additional battery.
When they turn down my battery request, I'll e-mail the Unresolved Issues department about it and ask for the warranty exchange due to the massive delays I've been put through. In my eyes, the battery should be included under warranty anyway.
Best of luck to the both of us then, I suppose! =P -
nice, I love how everyone has their little schemes planned out ahead of time, but honesty unless you know what to say and what to expect you usually don't end up getting what you deserve.
-
I am officially typing from my new beast of a laptop! This thing is phenominal the only thing is it won't fit in my backpack laptop compartment anymore but i reckon that isn't too much of an issue.
-
Niceeeee. One other little thing you'll have to get used to is the fingerprint/smudges that appear on the left and right palm rests as you use it (obviously from your fingers). It can get...."icky" sometimes. Just keep a cloth handy
.

Mine's still in boxing... hoping it will progress to "shipped" tonight, so hopefully it will get here tomorrow.
