840QM is months old at this point. Intel's quad-core i7-740QM and i7-840QM show up on Dell laptop menu -- Engadget

As for the i7 620.. The 840QM dominates it. The 620 has a 133MHz faster clock rate in Single Core Turbo and Dual Core Turbo, but it's still slower in reality since the 840QM has a much larger cache, faster bus, on-die memory controller, and of course, Quad Core when applicable (XPS 16 is a multimedia laptop, so using quad-core applications is extremely likely)! Even in non-quad core applications, the 840QM is going to be faster.

Too bad I'm stuck with the 720QM.. the worst of both worlds.

So ashamed that you won't put it in your signature! Bad times!

But back on topic... Yay i7 840qm. A decent quad core processor that has a higher base and turbo frequency than its predecessor!
Old news it may be but it's not available in the UK yet! But we still have the RGBLED :D

You have to love it. There's a $204 MSRP difference between the 720 and 840, but Dell charges $350 to upgrade. The 840 is definitely better, but I don't know if it's $350 better.

at last a "real" 4-cores Intel CPU :)

    i7 840QM is a blast compared to dual core i7 640M

well how many apps of 4 or 8 threads are you gonna run in a laptop? besides there arent many apps and by the time there will be in a yr or 2 by that time there will faster newer architecture quad mobiles which will make the 840qm and 940xm meaningless get a i5 540m or 580m when its out

    i am running a i7 620m in 3820tg its wicked fast also a 3.33ghz TB

also i7 840qm runs hot and 45nm i will wait for a sandy bridge quad mobile hope fully a 2~2.4 ghz quad mobile with 32nm and 35w tdp that will be wicked

Did they actually fix the vent so this molten inferno of a CPU won't throttle and wind up totally useless? :(

Seems as though most multimedia applications work better with more cores, and the XPS 16 is a multimedia laptop. Photoshop, Virtual Dub, Expression, and you name it love the cores! The opposite question could be asked: why buy a multimedia laptop to not run multimedia applications? It's not like the XPS 16 is exactly an amazing gaming laptop. I guess there are those who use it for running Virtual Machines, but there can't be too many of those people. And if you're just running "productivity" tools like Office, the XPS 16 is overkill and a waste of money.
