NVIDIA settle in US courts over faulty 8400M and 8600M GPU's

As an XPS M1330 owner I would like to point everyone's attention to
the news that NVIDIA has admitted to a major manufacturing screw-up,
which is seeing thousands of its GPUs overheating, burning out and
    failing.

There has been a class action brought against the company in the
United States and affected customers will be entitled to compensation,
provided they have one of the affected GPU's. These are the 8400M and
8600M. A settlement was agreed in the courts only recently and it
looks like NVIDIA got off pretty lightly, but only time will tell. As
there are potentially many thousands more with this GPU outside the US
there now is hope that we can finally get justice over this matter.

As a European citizen I would ask any European customers who have
suffered the problems due to the fault, whether you own Acer, Apple,
Asus, BenQ, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, LG, MSI, NEC, Sony, Toshiba (Yes, all
these computer companies have used these GPU's) to make a lot of noise
and keep contacting both your computer manufacturer and file a
complaint with a consumer rights office in your own country. This has
to be brought to the attention of the European courts for anything to
    happen here.

Here's a link to the official NVIDIA Settlement website:

The NVIDIA GPU Litigation - Home Page

Remember, so far this only refers to US customers so if you bought
your system outside the US this does not cover you. The only way to
get justice is to kick up a big fuss and to bring this to the
attention of the European Courts. You can use the site to see which
computer models have been covered in the settlement.

Here is a news article on the sorry story:

NVIDIA DISASTER: thousands of GPUs faulty

Finally, I would ask everyone affected to pass this information on by
posting in forums, social networking sites, etc. This was a big
surprise to me as Dell told me just a month ago that there is nothing
wrong with the 8400M GPU although I have had my motherboard replaced 3
times since the summer of 2007 when I purchased my XPS M1330 for
    nearly €2,000.

I'd like to point out that even though Nvidia haven't officially admitted any wrongdoing and are adamant that everyone knows this, they have basically admitted fault by agreeing to the settlement by awarding $2 million.

Could I make a request for this post to be made "sticky"?

It is important that affected customers outside the US are aware of these proceedings.

    Thank you

Do you know what Dell is going to be doing for users affected by this problem?

There have been quite a few posts on this exact same thing so people know about it already. As for outside of the USA it's going to require a class action lawsuit for each country unfortunately as the US supreme court can't rule on this kind of matter for other countries as well. :( I can't say that I think "complaints" are going to do much, you would have to find enough interested parties to participate in that kind of lawsuit and then contact a lawyer that is willing to and able to take the case.

Your model has to be listed on the settlement page.

The 8400M GS certainly does count. I have this GPU in my m1330 and it has failed 4 times.

Has your friend had any problems with it?

Even if your laptop houses the defective chips, if you don't own an affected model you cannot claim with the settlement. You can file another one for other models.

If your DELL or Apple laptop failed, you will get a replacement GPU.
If you have an HP laptop you will get a full replacement of the laptop.
You will also be reimbursed for any charges relating to the repair of such defective laptops and finally you can choose to be fully reimbursed for the cost of the product should you desire.

Again this only applies to US customers so far.

    Sorry for the misinformation.

Only Dell, HP-Compaq and Apple have models in this class action lawsuit.

No problem : ) I don't have my 1530 anymore...but the faulty GPU gave me plenty of problems. (Otherwise, the 1530 was fantastic whilst I had it). ;)

Yeah, it has been replaced twice!
But it is neither a HP, Dell, or Apple :( Sony is not on the list

It doesn't mean it wasn't affected by the defective Nvidia chips. I'm just saying you do not qualify for this settlement because your model isn't listed. You can talk with your state attorney general and see if you have enough evidence to start a lawsuit.
