What would you do on the XPS 9560 15"? Get either the 4k, or i7? Both is out of my budget. I want this to replace my gaming desktop which is 4 years old and plan to use an external gpu with it eventually.
Would you do the i7 - 7700, or do the 4k display? 4k display comes with the larger battery too, but just a i5 quad core.
Or if I got the i7 7700HQ, I only get the FHD with the smaller battery. Would the i5 be good enough?

don_svetlio In the Pipe, Five by Five.
If you want to game mostly - I'd probably suggest a 1060 or 1070 laptop. The XPS 15 is a luxury item meant for work primarily.

I don't game often and travel, so I plan to use it as a luxury item with the exception of replacing my desktop with it.
If you could help with the questions, I would be appreciated. -
The I5 is a small trade off as it is basically the i7 without hyperthreading so get the 4k but tbh you are kidding yourself if you want this to replace a desktop, it throttles in games, has issues with thunderbolt bandwidth among other issues.
think of it as a good laptop rather than a replace your desktop and you will be a bit happierLast edited: Mar 1, 2017pressing likes this. -
Interesting, I read on other sites that its great in games, and the bandwidth is only an issue for internal screen use. Not if I use my external monitor.

I have both i7 and 4K screen but if I had to choose just one, I'd opt for i7. 4K isn't really needed on a screen this size. imo Makes the laptop heavier plus drain the battery quicker. Also it's glossy and so reflects light a lot! Whereas the FHD has a Matt screen.
So, yes whilst you are correct that the 4K has a larger battery, it still doesn't last as long as the lighter, less powerful battery of the FHD models.
I tried the touchscreen out once I think since owning mine! -
Hmmmm, made it hard for me to decide again.
Well, let's see what happens tomorrow if Dell maybe sending me a free seed unit through a a connection I just found out about a bit ago. If they do, I can choose what I want. i7, 4k, then. 16gb, 512gb, 4 year warranty and TB16 if I can include it. That is how I got my 34" ultrawide curved screen......"free". They offered it, not me! -
What does one have to do in order to be given 'free' high-end hardware?
-
My company I work for spends millions a year with Dell/EMC so they know that and take care of us. Especially me as I have been helping them get our desktop business back since our last Desktop manager decided to go to HP because he didn't like Dell, and HP has been nothing but trouble. Well he isn't with us any longer and we are working on going back.

At the limit, the i7 seems to be throttling so unless you need hyperthreading, I'm not sure it is much higher performing than the i5, but that will depend on usage scecnario.
You can see 9560 performance data on page ~60 forward; there is an old table of benchmarks and throttling issues on p. 80...

The 4k screen is spetacular.varuka likes this. -
The 4K is spectacular but you always have to turn it down to 1080p to make games playable.
For me the XPS 9560 i5 With FHD screen is perfect for gaming.

Perhaps this video might help you make a decision?

Thanks for the video. I will watch it at lunch. Seems the free laptop is a no go right now. So I will have to hold off till I get what I want instead. I really would like to get both the i7 and 4k display, so the deals Del has right now are nothing on these laptops. Will have to wait for a special on them.
Need help deciding between 4k or i7?
