Hello everyone, I tried to search and could not find anything that could cover my problem, hopefully someone will be able to help me out.

I bought this laptop on eBay, everything seems great and it was a decent deal (but not great) Got the laptop and it worked fine for a few weeks and now it does not charge the battery anymore.

I get the error "Charger not recognized, please use correct charger....." or something of that nature.

I cannot get any support from Dell since it did not come from an authorized channel :( (my mistake)

I swapped batteries and chargers with another friends xps, and they work fine on his laptop just not on mine.

I was assuming this to be a software or BIOS issue, but even with the laptop completely turned off it does not charge the battery, or recognize the charger.

BUT if I remove the battery completely and plug it in, it still power the laptop, so it is giving out enough power to run the laptop but will not charge the battery and operates at 50% processing power.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated and if someone can help I can compensate them for their time.

You can transfer the warranty from anyone on ebay, not just an authorized seller...that is, however, saying that it is not "hot".

Basically it sounds like one of the connections within the motherboard portion of the charging port is damaged. Either you need to be really great with a soldering iron, or pick up a new motherboard.

Buying from Ebay doesn't mean you can't get warranty.

    OP sounds fishy.

All you can do is call tech support though.

Thanks for the responses, how do I transfer the warranty, does dell charge for this?

If that route does not work, were can I purchase a new motherboard for a good price?

    Thanks,

Well I have tried contacting the person I purchased the computer from on eBay with no luck. It seems I have purchased a laptop that might be "hot" and I am screwed.

I really do not know what to do at this point, I cannot seem to find a motherboard, and I am stuck with a $2,500 brick that won't charge.

    <--- depressed :(

P.S. DON'T BUY COMPUTERS OFF EBAY! (from personal sellers anyway)

I will keep you guys updated if I get a reply from the seller (or scammer)

    Thanks again,

Give them a call. Sometimes they recognize that the sellers do not provide the information and can change the information over the phone.

    have the same issue

boot the computer on battery power until it finishes the post and start loading windows, then you can plug the power back into the laptop, if it takes a few second before the power kicks in, then your power adapter is not giving enough power.

also, when wndows is loaded and you plug in the adapter, it gives a warning about not having enough power to run.

my laptop down-clocks from 2000mhz to 1500mhz (according to nhc) and is not charging the battery.

getting a new power adapter off ebay, they are only like 40 bucks and i read that they were the issue.

ill let you know if it works when it comes in the next few days.

    hope it helped

    UPDATE

I think it is the motherboard based on more research, some people say this is a common problem.

Anyone know where I can get a mother board for this laptop?

    Thanks in advance!

A replacement M1730 motherboard can be purchased from Dell Spare Parts, though I'm not sure about the cost.

Like Achillies said try inputing the service tag and system info on the Dell support web site and see what comes up, the service tag is under the battery and in the bios (unless the sticker was removed and bios modified). It's worht a try.

I have the same problem, it also looks to be fairly common too see here. and here

Dell have been worse than useless, my Laptop isn't a year old yet and they won't help. I have sent them my receipts and invoices as requested but they still threw the claim out. I cannot get the warranty transferred to my name, apparrently you can if you live in the USA but not the UK. So much for Dell premium XPS service.

Needless to say this is the last Dell I purchase.
