So, I got my m1730 today and decided to reformat. I thought I could make it through by following this guide, but I got lost :( . I've never reformatted a dell before, just my hp. Anyway, vista freezes on the screen where I am supposed to create a username.

The parts of the guide that lost me were:

-how many partitions should i create? I have 1 ssd and 1 hdd. I choose the first option. "allocate all space to /:c"

-I thought the "AHCI driver" would be on one of the driver cds, but I could not find it. Couldn't find it on the dell website either. Is it named something besides "AHCI" on their support site?

Could someone please walk me through this?

Vista does not need AHCI drivers, that's only for XP. You can create as many partitions as you want as far as I know. I have 4 right now, but last time I reformatted and reinstalled, I only had one.

If I had one HDD and one SSD, I would make the C: drive the entirety of the SSD to install Windows on and install programs, and make a D: drive out of the whole HDD to store more long-term files and documents.
