Hi, I am having problems to install the quickset in my m1210 with the server 2008 OS. I downloaded the driver for vista (since there is no driver for server2k8), but it cannot be installed. (BTW, I got the vista drivers working for the graphical card and such.)

I noticed that when it got unzipped, the description didn't mention m1210 as the supported model, and under the custom install, the "install to" is blank (which I assume should have a directory path to where you want to install it).

I remember when I first got this laptop, it came with quickset in the vista and it worked fine. And since server2k8 is almost same as vista, I don't why I cannot get the quickset to install. Can anyone help me? Thanks a lot!

Well, just want to try stuff out. It's not common, but i assume it should not be a problem to use a server OS on a laptop.

Did you try running the installer as administrator?

I did it with Windows 2003 Server and it works fine. I haven't done it with Windows 2008 because it costs too much, but I do run a Windows 2008 server and it works pretty well. Very stable operating system. Then again so has Vista x64 been for me.

If you don't mind rebuilding, you can get a legal 240 days out of the 2008 trial. (60 days, reset legally three times.) That's 8 months. Of course if you're not someone whol likes rebuilding every few months than that option isn't for you.

TechNet is your friend here though. $350 for the DL version of TN and you get keys good for 10 distinct activations to every OS (and every version of every OS) that MS currently distributes. Server and Desktop. Not to mention every Office Version, and pretty much everything else. These aren't 60-day trials. These are full versions with no time limits. The EULA states that these are for "evaluation" purposes only, and not for production or commercial use. So it'd clearly be a violation to install 10 copes of Vista in your small business. But I guess each individual can decide whether installing Server 2008 on their laptop constitutes "production" use.

Yeah I plan on using that trial when I get my next laptop. I've heard of TechNet before but never looked into it. That really isn't a bad price, is it a yearly subscription?

I meant, when you right click the installer it has the option to run as admin. If you already did that, sorry for being redundant. Have you tried compatibility mode?

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms788692.aspx

It is yearly in the sense that you get access to updates and the download area for that year. After a year you can no longer log in. However the activation keys that you have do not expire. So anything you downloaded and got keys for during that year stays with you. I recently re-installed Server 2003 that I obtained from a now-expired technet account, and it activated just fine. Of course, the key is to download and request keys for everything you could possibly want during your subscription year, since you'll get cut off after 12 months.

Renewels are cheaper if you want to keep it going. They've offered me $249 for a renewel, which I may do because my prior subscription expired before Server 2008 was released, so I don't have that.

If you don't want to bother with those huge ISO downloads, you can get the full media version, where they ship you everything on DVD. But that's like $549 or something. Still a fabulous deal for what you get, but a bit more of a sticker shock.

The official point of this is for companies to be able to set up test environments with unresticted software. But I think it's pretty clear that a great percentage of TechNet (or MSDN) subscriptions come from guys who just want access to all of this stuff for cheap. Just don't run your business with this stuff.

    Hi,
I have been running the Windows Server 2008 X64 on my M1330, everything works fine - except the Quickset. I d/l the Quickset (R163853) from the Dell website (Vista X64 section) and installed fine. Whenever I run it, i got the error "quickset has stopped working".
    Any idea?

Not sure about the 1330. Here is the Quickset that I use on my M1530 (Vista x64):

    R182249

I'm assuming that if it works on Vista x64 that it'll work on Server 2008 x64, but I guess i don't really know if the Quickset for the 1330 and 1530 are the same. You might give it a shot though.
