I`m currently looking into re-writing the thermal zones of the XPS 1730.
The GPU fans kick in at 75C and I don`t like that one bit. My temps always stay below 75C at stock frequencies, so I`m sure the fans are more than enough to keep the system MUCH cooler.
Question is, HOW ?

You can just use NiBiTor (nvidia bios editor) to tweak the fans and even undervolt it if you like. Only if your drivers and GPU supports it.
-
I don`t need to undervolt it, the CPU is at 0.98V right now anyways
I just want the fans to kick in MUCH faster.
Thanks, I`ll give that a try. -
Far as I know we cant control the fans at all?
If we can, I'd really love to have mine on high all the time when plugged in. -
M1730's have a seperate dedicated fan for the GPU. m1530's have a shared fan with the CPU
Eleron be aware, that you still have to backup your current vBIOS, put it on a bootable usb stick and use NVflash to install the new vBIOS. Its quite a long process. Beginners shouldnt try attempt this at all.
Be very cautious when attempting this, i dont wanna be responsible for anything.
On the temperatures tab, you can set the fan speed, temperature thresholds, throttle and fan boost.
You can also overclock from here, so it doesnt matter which drivers you use. Its automatically overclocked. -
It should also be able to be done programmatically. l8kfangui can turn on two of the fans (CPU and one of the GPUs) but hasn't been updated in a long time so doesn't support 3 fan laptops.
Also the Dell diagnostic tools can put the fans into 3 states (full, normal and off). Be nice if some could create a service or program that we could run to force the fans on. -
if we can get the actual .wph for the bios im sure changes could be made =)

Anybody got any idea as to how you could get those?
Need some expert advice here on modding an XPS1730...
