I can't beleive I'm saying this...the XPS M1730 actually looks great!
Just a few weeks ago when I first posted the initial pictures of the M1730, we all agreed that it was one of the most ugly and horrible looking laptops we had ever seen.
Now, with these new pictures, it looks like Dell took those prototype images and created a decent looking gaming machine. It doesn't look too bulky, and the carbon fiber look isn't as prominent. The machine actually comes in three other additional colors besides the black/red we have seen in the past. Personally, I'm really diggin the grey/black.
Well, now we will have to wait until the release. Anyone here when it's supposed to come out?
Here's the link to the new pictures::

Enjoy.

I think it still looks terrible...maybe just me though. However, the backlit keyboard (i think) is cool.
-

The version with the grey panels looks much more appealing. Then again, it's pretty boring on my part, and people buying the machine are probably looking for something flashy and colorful.
Definitely doesn't look as horrendous as those first images. -
Looks a lot better in real life than those first pictures. I would not buy one though.
-
Wow that looks real nice, the design kind of resembles an alienware.
-
Finally!!! I was wondering when pics were going to be posted. I lost all my contacts at Dell cause they all left so I have lost my way... I have now found it. I admit it is bulky but the xps line has always been that way. for those that remember the first gen, this is a massive improvement... but then again, just about anything under 3 inches thick was :S. I like it... can't wait til they are release. Doubt I will buy one, but I can always wish... my iMac is coming first
can't wait!

CodeMonkeyX,
I'm just curious, how come you wouldn't get this laptop?
I'm thinking about getting this or the m1330, but I want a larger screen. This 17 inch would be great for me... -
I think most people buying the M1330 are looking for power in a mobile form factor.
-
I just saw these pics from the thread at engadget. I think the red LED panel is the best by far.
-
lol yeah complete opposites other than they have XPS in their name
-
Hideous. 'Pro' hardware that could masquerade as a Fisherprice kids toy.
I sincerely hope that the m1330 wasn't a 'happy accident' in terms of it's subtle, classy styling. I had hoped that Dell had decided to 'grow up' with regard it's self proclaimed 'pro hardware' and move away from this tacky aesthetic.
I only hope that this thing doesn't sell. Dell might not know design, but they know numbers; and if the m1330 sells 10 units for every one of these monstrosities, maybe... just maybe, they'll learn. -
Chuck232,
Well I definitely want to get a Dell. And I do not like the Inspiron line. I want a laptop from the XPS line, and the 1330 and 1730 are the two new laptops with brand new technology. I just have to decent if I really want the portibility of the 1330 or go for the bigger screen with the more powerful 1730. -
If its true that the 1730 is coming with the 8800, there is no real reason for discussion lol I'd go with the 1730.

Crickey Jebus!
It does look like
as posted by "Registered", : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=161943
Woohoo!
Would have looked cooler if there was more of that stripy red lighting. Or if the base had been lighter. But thank Jebus it isn't the barfbook we saw originally.
Hmm, it looks somewhat toyish in that first live pic. Reminds me of a Playskool product. -
I'll take my m1330 ANY day compared to one of those abominations!
-
-
I think it's the gloss that makes it look slightly 'childish'. Or it looks like.. glossy plastic or something. It'll be interesting to know what it's built with.
-
-
I'm definitely going to buy the red one, now the 8800s just need to come out with this book and I'll buy it with the QUICKNESS!
-
Inside doesn't look so bad. Looks quite sleek actually
So...no XPS logo glow? Kinda looks nice below.
Imo, blue doesn't look as nice. Maybe it's the glass box or it's just the shade of blue they picked....
-
Yeah the red or bone white is definitely the way to go if you plan on purchasing this machine.
-
I think the grey on black is the most appealing if you don't want such a "showy" machine, especially for school or work.
-
They could have atleast used the bloody Vostro keyboard instead of the silver Inspiron one, but probably thought, 'Hang on, it'll look edgy with a contrast.'
How wrong they were.
They could even have tied in the colour accents with the backlit keyboard. Red panels, red lit board. Blue panels, blue lit board. White panels, white lit board. Obviously the grey panels would be a bit of a problem but you see what I mean.
All it required was a little extra thought to tie it all together. -
My friend Moe has an XPS M1710 and he thinks since you usually can change the lights on everything else would it work for the back lit keyboard I said probably not but am I wrong on that?
-
oh.. the red and blue look better than white.
-
The backlit keyboard is a part in itself. Probably limited on whats available. Cant just make it multi colored as Dell doesnt make the keyboard. Its a great feature so far Ive only seen it on the macs and now this. I have yet to see one thats not white.
-
Black keyboard would have looked nice too, L.Rawlins. Good point.
Is the keyboard straight out of the 1720? Or special one made for XPS? On reviews, the 1710's keys seem to be a lot nicer than the 1720's -
I like clean minimal designs, rather than lots of crazy patterns and lights.
I was just pointing out that in real life it looks a lot better than the first shots I saw a few weeks ago. Those look horrible.
These new pictures make the system look decent, unlike the old photos we saw. -
oh. my. gosh. backlit keyboard. i wish that they couldve somehow fit that into the m1330... but yeah, the new pics of the 1730 do look nice. the first pics were probably prototypes, cuz i remember the red looked a little too fake...
-
I'm mostly sour towards this notebook because the m1330 didn't make the cut for the backlit board. I would have carried it's first born, let alone purchase it had it done so.
As mentioned previously, we've waited long enough for a mainstream notebook manufacturer to give Windows users a little backlit lovin'.
I wonder if it's ambient, using the webcam to meter light? Having an on/off switch would be distinctly clunky. Especially for the money you just know this thing will go for. -
If not the M1730, then what? I'm looking for a great laptop that would fully utilize DX10 with new games, plus be great for work and school. This laptop doesn't seem too bulky...what do you recomend then? -
However, if I had loads of money I like the look of the Falcon Northwest systems. Those are sweet, but so expensive. -
Still looks fugly to me. Perhaps it's a matter of taste, but that keyboard looks hideous and clash with the cheap carbon fiber appearance of the casing. However, 2 HD's, SLi 8700M GT's...that thar's a beast under the hood!
-
I think using a webcam for this purpose would be power draining as it would have to be on all the time. A camera is much more complex than an ambient light sensor. It definately wont have an on/off switch.
This is a fantastic feature I wish was in more laptops. Its been in the macs for years now. (not a mac fan, but they DO tend to incorporate things ahead of everyone else sometimes.) -
Please allow me to be an unofficial grammar police on NBR because it kills me when the word definitely is incorrectly spelled as "definAtely."
-
DELL FAN try the x 205 instead by the way it still looks awfull
-
oh and i heard there going to make the m 1710 with geforce 8700m gt
-
Let's hope you can upgrade the M1710 to a 8800M Gt when it makes its appearance.

The contrast is too much. They should have had darker colors for Red/Blue. I like
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff149/Registered_2007/1730b.jpg better. -

Lenovo also has some nice discounts going on. -
I think it looks nice and that's shocking as I rarely think Dell laptops are physically appealing.
-
I note that most comments about it looking nice are with the screen down so you can't see the keyboard: and most of the "fugly" comments are when you CAN see the keyboard... just goes to show you, even when the populace at large doesn't know exactly what's wrong, they know SOMETHING'S wrong... I submit that something is the high-contrast between the keyboard and the case. -
does anyone know the RTS dates yet? Most of my former Dell techs have quite so I don't have my sources anymore
.
-
Oh my god, that looks like more Dell-ays. I think they really need to hire one more one-handed monkey for the painting process now. The one they have is already struggling with the M1330 covers.
-
I have given up on waiting for you, 1730.
Had you actually appeared on the 27th it might have been a different story. -
If this is Michael Dell's idea to turn around his company, they're going to be in a lot of trouble...Blech. This machine should be tacky even to a 14 year old gamer/skateboarder. Sure, the specs are good, but it's comparable to sticking a V12 into a Pinto.
Less is more. Apparently, Dell hasn't figured that out yet. -
It looks like a train wreck. They are definately trying to appeal to the 13yr old to 14yr old demographic.
Its just gastly. -
