hey bill, I like how you talked about the envy cause I am also considering envy vs the xps. Can you tell us anything about the gpu comparision vs the envy? I understand the xps line is going to be thin, but is it going to be lightweight compared to envy? I think the decision is going to come down b/w if i want the greater gpu vs thinner(maybe ligher) comp. thanks again

Final pricing not set, but it will be similar to the current XPSs' launch prices, more than the current prices, I'm sure.

I will have to look up our GPU's to give you a sort of an idea. I can't really spell it out, but I can vaguely make some sort of comparative statement. I would imagine our 14 will be lighter than their 14, and the 15 will be close. I'd guess we'll be technically a bit lighter since we've had time to see theirs. Just a guess. Nothing I've read anywhere.

Bill am I going crazy or did you say in an earlier post for us to look for an 'exciting' announcement today? All I could see was some info on you putting Ivy into desktops but that aint that exciting :p

Dell-Bill has already said that the XPS laptop lineup isn't coming until sometime in June hopefully. At least I don't have to keep watching this thread everyday to see if things are changing.

Huh, I am seeing ivy bridge in an Inspiron 15R... also with a full hd screen... on dell.co.nz. Kind of interesting and worth my first post? (ok a little off thread topic) Is this common knowledge and I have missed it?

I assume there are no reviews around of this little unit just yet. Hmmm.

I'm guessing that because the IB XPS isn't out yet, it is temporarily taking its place to cover a wider market

I wonder if this was the dv6/7 competitor that bill was talking about. They are definitely in the same segment. Looks like it is up on most dell sites now.

I just checked the new Inspiron 15R page. Wow, the new chassis is quite nice and it has Radeon HD 7730M!!

Radeon HD 7730M is expected to be as fast or a bit faster than GT 640M. I really hope XPS L521x will have faster GPU option (GT 650M GDDR5 or equivalent) but I think it won’t happen because of Alienware M14x :(

HP Pavillion dv6 has GT 650M GDDR5 option.

New Inspiron and XPS got new designs but the gaming premium Alienwares only got refresh CPU & GPU with the bulky old chassis

Without going back and looking at the posts, I believe that mention was part of a conversation with lordbaldric about competitor offerings. I was just hinting at a product launch in APJ of our dv6 competitor, but you figured it out in subsequent posts. :)

Indeed. It's a really nice box for that price range. Good value for the performance and features. I'm trying to decide between that and an XPS for my wife. It will come down to value vs premium hardware.

Preview only in that some of the features on the InspironR SE will be in the XPS. I love this system at this price point. It makes a compelling case to move me off of the XPS. Tough decisions.

Yes. I kind of posted earlier about how the consumer line up will change. These systems are part of that. These are the upper-mid range. XPS will be the upper.

Hi, this is my first post in the site. I've been saving money for a XPS and I can't wait for the new models.

I have a question, what about the keyboard. I read that the keyboard is going to be different that the current one, something about "chiclet keyboard". Looking on internet I saw this kind of keyboard is like calculator's keys or some kind or rubber, is it true? is it gonna be confortable and durable??

PS: Sorry for my english, it isn't my native language jeje

Hmmmm....I may be able to help you fight the urge. ;) PM coming your way in a bit.

Your English is great. No need to apologize. I speak some Spanish, and your English is 100X better than my Spanish.

We can comment on practically nothing specific at this time, but as we get closer to launch, I will share some details. However, about the keyboard, chiclet style keyboards are a popular trend among manufacturers and customers. Dell pays attention to popular trends. ;)

Cannot say yet. I like them both, actually. They have different advantages.

Oi! I've been watching the new XPS line for ages, and was I ever offered to be PMed confidential data? No! :p

@jrmcr: The current keyboard is chiclet. The new line might have a slightly different style - perhaps flatter, like the trend is heading - and I would be shocked if it wasn't backlit (seeing at the current line is also).

Hmm with the new Inspiron models out and seeing the price of them it got me kind of worried about the refreshed XPS prices. I'm waiting on the new XPS 15 but if it's gonna cost more than 1000 euro's I might aswell look for something cheaper...

After being a complete jerk, I'm still in make-up mode with lordbaldric. He shall have sweet nothings whispered into his ear until we are friends.

Don't worry. I'm not telling him anything earth shattering. You're not left out.

Black only for the R SE, but I bet you guys figure out a secret at some point after it launches in the US. Hit me up after they start shipping to the US. If no one figures it out by then, I'll spill the beans.

I've been debating between getting the new Alienware M14x R2 and this new XPS refresh, if the XPS has a better quality screen like the last gen B+RGLED and better speakers JBL 2.1 then I may be inclined to buy the XPS over the M14x R2.
But the fact that the R2 is available right now and with Diablo 3 two weeks away makes the wait just brutal lol... (can't play D3 on my crappy netbook that i'm currently using, this thing can't even play YouTube at full screen lol)
    The torture continues... :(

Thanks Bill! I really hope it is nVidia as Kepler walks rings round AMD offerings. Not only that but Optimus is far more mature.

One more question, what are the chances of the XPS coming with an IPS screen this time around?

AMD should be very competitive with Nvidia once the HD 77XXM and HD 78XXM launches. AMD's upcoming HD 7750(70)M and HD 7850(70)M are slated to directly compete with the kepler GT 640M, GT 650M, and GTX 660M. Leaked benchmarks even show the HD 7870M on par with the Fermi GTX 670M, which is clocked to outperform the GTX 660M. Likewise, early benchmarks show the HD 7770M slightly outperforming the GT 650M. Weaker automatic graphics switching is probably the only real disadvantage AMD has, but it's possible that this issue may be fixed with Enduro...

I feel the same exact way. I have been resisting the urge to hit the buy button on the current XPS 17 model with Sandy Bridge processors. Only problem is once the new Dell XPS lineup is released, I want to wait for some deals to come out first before buying the XPS. It seems like I won't be able to buy a XPS laptop on a deal until August to Sept which sucks because I need a computer badly.

Windows 8 = No Thanks. Tried the Consumer Preview and I hated it. Its great for tablets but horrible for desktops/laptops with a keyboard and mouse. Windows 8 should be released sometime in October but I really hope it gets delayed until December. I will be sure to buy a Dell XPS laptop before Windows 8 comes preinstalled.

    Hey Bill_B,
It is good see a Dell representative as a forum member! Thank you for your co-operation!

Inspiron SE would have been an overwhelming laptop if higher processors( i7 3610QM,i7 3615QM, i7 3720QM) and slightly better GPUs ( HD 7750m,HD 7770m or Nvidia GT 650m) were included( inspiron SE is a full size laptop not a slimmer one) as customization options. It is fine but DV6 is still better with its better configuration options(upto i7 3820QM and GT 650m!).

And stop promoting only Alienware laptops for gaming(GT 650m is only available in m14x!!).

surely those higher options will be saved for the XPS(z) lines so they can charge a premium for them otherwise there would be no point even having different models

Dell-Bill_B, I've been looking at an XPS 17 for months now and I'm about to the point where I really need to go ahead and order one. I've already got it saved in my cart and ready to go.

Are you able to give any more information as to when in May we can expect mroe announcements ont he updates to the XPS line so I'd know how long I'd have to wait for more information?

Or knowing this, that I don't care about small form factor /weight, do you think I'd be happier waiting for the new xps17 as opposed to the current one?

Thanks for telling me what you can. I'd hate to wait it out if the main design changes were to make it sleaker/sexier which I don't care about at all, but then on the other hand I'd hate to not wait if there is something more ground breaking in the new design that I might prefer.
