Looks like we'll need to ask Bill...
If these devices were to exist, would they be user upgradable?

I'm hoping that article is wrong and he didn't look clearly at the bottom.

It's like XPS13, the bottom is an one piece, but it's enough simple to open.
It's pretty much sure that we can change mSATA SSD or HDD, the only question is if RAM is soldered in XPS14/15, but some leaked info says not, at least for XPS15.

    Hi all,
I have been lurking for a while but had to ask weather or not the XPS 14 is rumored to be coming with the GT 620M or 630M. I have been following for a while and it seemed through all the leaked information so far that it was the 28nm die shrunk 630M. But recent information appears to contradict that.

USB Ports on the left side are USB 3.0

You can read SS near port & It means Super Speed. USB 3.0 is called USB super speed too.

Till now everybody talked about 630m, but if im not mistaken the die shrunk of the 630m is the 620m but with 64-bit bus and has the gpu-z show us a 620m with 1gb ddr5 i doubt there will be another option.
which is not bad and should be similar to a gt 540m

Actually if I'm not mistaken the gt 630 is a die shrink with enhancements of the gt 540.

well gt 630m is a lot of things (nvidia marketing  )
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

it goes from a renamed gt 525m to a gt 540m clocked at 800 Mhz (dont know if it is turbo boost), but everything in 40nm, til now at least.

Check the gpu-z screen shots on the review of the gt 630m on nothebookcheck, its all renamed gf108 chips, til now.
In the future things may be different.
as for the gt630 being 28nm, is possible that they called a gt 620m with gddr5 a gt 630m, just like the gt 550m with ddr5 was called gt 555m.

Yeah, I really wanted the screen because of the B+RG. I don't care that much about the higher resolution, but the WAY better brightness and color would have been nice. And as I understand it, those screens are completely gone =(

I just hope we'll be able to easily replace the HDD and upgrade the RAM if ever needed and I'm a happy man.

Ah, I also hope they didn't nerf the CPU's turbo boost (like they apparently did on Clevo's W110ER iirc) as I'll occasionally need it to play some pcsx2 & dolphin. :)

I can live with a 320gb area hdd but I really hope RAM is upgradable. It's an easy and cheap upgrade. Don't get me wrong though I'd love to put in an SSD myself when the prices drop

Thanks you two for the replies I am eager to see what this GPU is billed as. According to Nvidia the 620M runs ddr3 @ 625 MHz. As this is running ddr5 (still @ 625 MHz) I have a feeling nunomoreira10 is accurate in saying that this may be billed as a 630m, just a slightly lower clocked one. Any thoughts as to whether or not overclocking the GPU to 800 MHz would be an option?

Don see why not, as long as the software support the product you can overclock it to your will but 800Mhz is a bit farfetched. Try see on the Asus Zenbook tread if they manage to overclock the gt620m

Samsung's 17" chronos has a 90W adapter and it has the 3610qm and a GT 650M, 2 fans & a 17" screen. Apparently throttling can only be noticed in furmark. So it should be fine.

The only quad core available on the new XPS 15 will be the i7 3612QM, which has a TDP of 35 watt, same as the standard voltage IVB dual cores. The 640M should also be pretty power efficient (maybe a 30 watt TDP? not sure...). I think a 90 watt adapter will be fine :).

For anyone wondering about the 630M, we've said it is in 28nm. I've talked with Dell reps and they say the vostros ship with 28nm 630M's. I see no reason for the XPS 14 to be any different (assuming it has a 630M). That should put people's worries to rest.

If you disagree/don't think it exists, I strongly encourage you to ask dell yourself ^.^

Honestly I think the bigger concern with the 630M is that it's substantially slower than the 640M. I wouldn't haven't expected Dell to opt for the 40nm part considering that I doubt nvidia is really interested in producing shipping quantities (i.e. enough for Dell et al.) of that part when they can just as easily produce the 28nm part.

My plan at this point is to just try the 14 in person and see how I feel about it. I'm leaning towards getting something thinner/lighter since a 630M isn't exactly a robust gaming-oriented GPU as it is, so I'm not anticipating getting a lot of mileage out of it. However, if the display is tops and I find the overall feel good for productive use, I may deal with the weight.

Uh, I'm not sure that's true. My XPS 15 runs Windows 8 pretty well (except CPU usage seems to be high in CP (I haven't installed RP yet)) and drivers were all installed automatically, except for the touch-screen, which didn't have drivers until recently.

Well keep in mind it's much faster than the previous high end GPU in the XPS L502x :p

Other than that, I agree with you. It would have been cool to see a 640M LE option.

Edit: Not much faster... but still faster, in a smaller chassis.

I see a lot of misinformation being spread around by dell websites and people who don't quite know what they're talking about. i7-3612QM is a 35w quad, and the 640m is something like a 35w gpu, 35+35=70, 90 != 70, the display/etc do not use 20w, so it will not be a problem even under high intensity loads.

A touchscreen option is unlikely, and I'm lol'ing that Smart Connect is only available for the 512GB ssd option, I'm guessing that's a mistake by someone.

Lets wait till it's on Dell's US site.

I reckon the gt 640m is 25w as the acer m3 640m review power consumption was low. I reckon 650m is more a 35w gpu and 660m is more a 45-50w gpu.

I think it depends on configuration (clock speed, ram type and speed, # of shaders [96 or 144]) whether it's faster than the 540M, although the 540M wasn't exactly a powerhouse either.

In any case, it's mainly a balancing act. 630M will run some games but I have to weigh that against gaming not being an emphasis for me, and the convenience of a lighter (and possibly slimmer) profile. So, I think maybe display quality will be the final arbitrator. I'm not sure, though.

If there is only one possibility to throttling because there is enough power from AC adapter, for me this is not good, also preceding generation of MBP throttling under windows because enough there isn't enough power from AC adapter.
Samsung Chronos is a classic example of throttling because enough power from power supply:

why to save some $/€ they do this rubbish:
Samsung Series 5 has max power of 92.8W
Samsung Series 7 hax max power of 95.4W
Power supply is only 90W so they drain energy from battery or throttling...

From review of Samsung Series 5:
