I want the option to at least have a gtx 660m
-
also it better have two hard drive bays since its 17 inches
-
yeah all dell xps fans are hoping for their best in upcoming notebook which is remaining 7 days to wait. hahaa
-
My bet would be little major differences from the current XPS systems. That said, the 15" seems to have undergone some changes, so there is a chance.
I'd expect you will still see the 2 HDD bays you have today.
Thinner/lighter is a maybe since Ivy Bridge is so much lower in TDP, but you still need to have room to cool things so don't expect miracles. There's a reason the MacBooks are overheating these days-too thin to properly cool things. I'd prefer a little more bulk and real cooling. I honestly don't have an issue with the current XPS 17 thickness, though sure a little thinner wouldn't be unwelcome. As long as it's sturdy.
Powerful processor choice? You mean like there already is? You can already get some insanely powerful CPUs for the XPS 15 and 17. I don't see that changing. -
I guess the gt650 gddr5 version of the card will be good. Any release date of pictures?
-
does the current version have dual hdd bays??
-
-
good
I am excited for the release!
-
crossing my fingers for a ddr5 version of the gt 650m

yeah i think dell will provide the best for graphic card and defeat hp in this part. haha
-
-

so anyway do u know any info of xps l721x, what it is look like. hmmm. anyway sorry for giving bad expression of it. -
I guess no announcement of a Dell L721X laptop yet. I am praying that the new Dell XPS 17 design does not look like the proposed XPS 15 with the very thin profile. I would hate the thin design like the Ultrabooks and the loss of ports. I hope Dell announces a new Dell XPS 17 soon since I have been waiting patiently for an Ivy Bridge refresh.
I personally like the L702X design for the most part and if all Dell did was just keep the same design and just add quad core Ivy Bridge and Nvidia 650M graphics card, I will be a happy camper and will be one of the first people to buy a laptop since I have been waiting patiently. I guess the only thing I would change if they needed to make some sort of design change is the placement of the speakers and a need for a bigger subwoofer. I don't like how the speakers are positioned where your armrests are and the subwoofer looks pretty small and weak compared to the XPS 15. -
The mobile Ivy Bridge chips aren't being released for a few weeks yet (June iirc). Today was the release of the higher-end i7 and i5 chips for desktops. To hit store shelves in a week. I wouldn't expect laptop announcements until the mobile chips are announced.

BTW, ericdabbs, I feel very much the same way as you!
EDIT:
"After months of avid speculation about when, precisely, in April Intel would roll out its new Ivy Bridge “3D” processors, they’ve arrived at last — later than originally expected, but just as predicted a few weeks ago: the first 14 chips, targeted at desktops and high-end laptops, will be available on April 29."

It shouldn't be too long at this point. Hopefully just another week or two. -

another news. Dell xps l721x will use gtx series graphic card.
Yahoo! Message Boards - NVIDIA Corporation - Intel IvyBridge laptops with NVIDIA graphics to be shipped starting 4/23 -
As a side note, the above poster/mod Andrew actually wrote the two referenced articles. -
I forgot the mobile quads were announced.
Furthermore, every other "multimedia" laptop, which is essentially Dell's target zone for the XPS, is only running GT cards. Dell putting the very powerful variant of the 555m in last year's model was a pleasant surprise. -
Last year on the Dell L702X, the GT 555M card was used which was the highest GT video card. -
GT 650m is very similar to GTX 660m so Dell can use both.
-
that would be awesome if they did but I doubt that. I wouldn't mind paying an extra $200 for it though.
-
I'd rather Dell use the new AMD cards that are coming out.
-
-
-
Yeah. it just matter of time. i would prefer gt650 with gddr5 for dell xps l721x since i want dell to compete with hp. and i hope dell xps will able to defeat the envy class of hp. hehe

no news yet, here is the samsung 7 though
Samsung Announces the Series 7 CHRONOS 17 Laptop | techPowerUp
might get that one, but wanna hear nfo on the dell first
I hope it has a option to have a msata bootup thing -
It would appear that the HP Pavilion (dv6-7017tx) has the 650m with 2GB DDR5. HP Pavilion dv6-7017tx Entertainment Notebook PC Product Specifications - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
I would be surprised if the Dell XPS laptops didn't have that option as well. I'd be fine with the 1GB DDR5 as well, as I've read that 1GB vs 2GB doesn't make much difference on video cards anyway.
Also, from what I've seen online, the GT 650m is supposed to be pretty close in performance to the GTX 560m. Unless I'm mistaken, it's also supposed to have Optimus, which could help battery life when you're not gaming, etc. -
-
Just an fyi, even the GTX cards such as the GTX 580m support Optimus, but no manufacturers are implementing it on their systems that use GTX cards. Every system using a GT card implements it. This is mainly due to how Optimus works (routing the final output through the Intel graphics despite which card is used to do the hard work) and that not being ideal for gaming allegedly. Me, it seems a no-brainer to use it on these battery-hog systems when the power isn't needed, but there must be a good reason NO one implements Optimus on high-end cards. -
http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=832&graphics=GeForce GT 650M GDDR5
it will be a good computer if they use it! -
-
The 660M is a big time dog. 66% more power for a slight graphics power bump. No thanks.
-
-
That is incorrect. The GT650m and GTX660m are actually the same card, with different clock rates. In fact the GT640m is the same card as well, but with even lower clock rates and no support for GDDR5.
Both the GT650m GDDR5 and GTX660m GDDR5 are going to consume exactly the same amount of power in low-load situations. The branding just doesn't make sense.. -
-
-
To be honest, I don't understand why we are spending so much time discussing about this. When was the last time Dell put the GTX graphics line in the XPS line? I can bet that the highest card we will see offered on the XPS line is the GT 650M. A GTX 660M graphics card on a Dell XPS 17 is a pipe dream that needs to be dropped like a bad habit. -
-
The GTX560m has optimus support, the GTX580m has optimus support, and im pretty sure the GTX660m will have optimus support as well.
