I commented on this earlier, but I noticed that my new m1530's drive slot was a lot quieter than my old m1530's. Someone commented on it being an updated driver. So I looked it up, and it turns out it's a completely different model.

Here's the specs to the old disc drive (The loud one):
    Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-7640A ATA Device

    IDE\CdRomOptiarc_DVD+-RW_AD-7640A________________JD05____
    IDE\Optiarc_DVD+-RW_AD-7640A________________JD05____
    IDE\CdRomOptiarc_DVD+-RW_AD-7640A________________
    Optiarc_DVD+-RW_AD-7640A________________JD05____
    GenCdRom

And here's the new one (Quieter):
    MATSH1TA DVD+-RW UJ-875S ATA Device (1=I)

    IDE\CdRomMATSH1TA_DVD+-RW_UJ-875S________________D200____
    IDE\MATSH1TA_DVD+-RW_UJ-875S________________D200____
    IDE\CdRomMATSH1TA_DVD+-RW_UJ-875S________________
    MATSH1TA_DVD+-RW_UJ-875S________________D200____
    GenCdRom

The speed of ejection is equivalent (My favorite feature)

Similar here. My old (replaced) machine had an Optiarc that played very loudly for one particular disc.

The replacement machine has a Teac that showed normal operation on the same disc that played poorly on the Optiarc.

You have to be kidding me.... how many times are they going to change the parts up on this model? The disk drive KILLS me when I turn the machine on, cause I'm usually in a quiet room, and everyone gives me the stare when the drive makes that funky noise.

Mine too. And I'd have to say noise level is good. My desktop LG DVD drive is way louder.

Yeah, before I got my m1530. I heard about everyone saying how noisy the drive is etc.... Mine sounds great. My old DV6000t's drive was much louder.

I have the Optiarc, and it's pretty loud. Last night was actually the first time I used it and noticed it. Is it something Dell will replace if I complain about it? It's quite annoying.

I'm not sure if you can get it replaced, but you can always try calling technical support and vent about a noisy hard drive and how it bothers other people around you, etc. :) oh and don't forget it bothers yourself too.

For those with the TEAC drive, which is a fair few here, how are you finding its performance? Personally I find it is nice and quiet, and ejects solidly. However, many DVD's that are read fine in my other laptop, don't read very well in the TEAC drive.

Basically if I try to copy files (for example), they will stop halfway through with a "cannot read" error. No such problem on my other laptop (has a MATSH1TA UJ-810 drive).

Just wondering if anyone else has had such issues? I also read another user comment here of the TEAC drive not burning very well / very often... how are your experiences in that regard?

Just want to know if I should start worrying about it or not... would rather not cry warranty, for fear of rough technicians, and winding up with the dreaded OPTIARC drive.

my TEAC has been fine. It reads everything and writes pretty good. Only thing is when i go to eject anything it makes my computer stutter for a sec than it goes away.

I have the Optiarc drive... ordered on April 22nd I think. It's noisy... but whatever. It's better than worrying about snapping the damn thing off with non-slotfed drive. It also seems to read/write with no problems... so I can put up with a little (a lot of) noise.

Edit: Talked to Dell support today, said my drive was noisy... and they must've heard it a lot cuz he's sending a tech here in the next couple of days to replace it with the newest one. Hope he doesn't ruin something else while replacing it...

Well, as of September 2008, what is the newest one: Matsh*ta UJ-875S, Optiarc AD-7640A, Teac, etc?
