    Hey guys

When ordering my Xps 1530 and me being new to computers, I did not realise that the faster the hdd the faster load up times ect. are.

I wiped my dell and it is still almost 1 minute to load and it is doing my nut in.

Can someone please give any advise on what I need and were to get it from and are they easy to install, also I live in the UK so no american companies please.

Thanks for all your help again.

Just order online or go to a retail store that sells hard drives. Capacity doesn't matter, but you will want a hard drive that says "7200RPM".

Brandwise, Samsung's are the quietest in the 250GB 7200RPM market. So that would be the best one to get. Unless you want a 320GB drive or higher.

That is a desktop drive. You need 2.5 inch notebook drives.

Yes and make sure it has a SATA connector, not PATA or IDE.

How much should I be paying for this?

    So I need a 250gb+ and a 7200 rpm 2.5 inch sata hard drive.

Anything else i need to know about?

    Thanks again guys

Oh also can someone give me a link as well, wether its for an american or canadian site or not, at least I know what I will be looking for, Dell are trying to charge £200.00 for a new HDD which I think its a rip off, thats $400.00 american.

It depends on the company really. Dell's site is a ripoff. If you are looking for 320 7200RPM drive, Seagate Momentus 7200.3 is the one they use, it costs no more than 240 USD.

Then I guess you won't be wanting an SSD (OCZ Core series - best value). Stick with what's already been suggested and you'll do fine.

???GB 7200 RPM 2.5 inch Sata hard drive should come cheap from a decent manufacturer.

Just to give you an idea about the 320GB 7200RPM drives that are SATA and 2.5''...

Western Digital 7200RPM 320GB <- Cheapest of the lot, can be found for about 175 USD, it does not Vibrate as much, but the ticking sounds it makes are a lot, however there is a solution for Western Digital drives to make them quiet, though I have not tried it out myself.

Hitachi 7k320 <- Costs about 230 USD or less, though is known to be a bit on the "vibrate more than other drives and make more noise" side, even moreso than the 7k250 (the 250GB 7200RPM drive hitachi has that is also dead quiet). However performance is typically known to be the best with Hitachi drives.

Seagate Momentus 7200.3 <- Costs around the same as Hitachi, harder to find, but offer excellent performance and though there is some ticking, it is very minimal, vibrations are also minimal. The performance is close to that of the hitachi, though you get the best of it not vibrating as much as the hitachi, yet offering good performance that is relatively quiet. There is a solution for Seagate drives to make them quiet, though I have not tried it out myself, but will later today. Though after setting the Performance mode of the Hard Drive to Quiet, it has been near totally silent.

The Seagate Momentus 7200.3 is what I have, I love it.

The Hitachi 7K320 is the fastest hard drive, followed by the WD 3200BEKT, followed by the Seagate 320GB 7200.3.

250GB harddrives are slower than their 320GB versions.

I recommend WD3200BEKT for a good mix of performance and power efficiency.

Don't forget the other factors involved. The Hitachi 7k320 also makes the most vibration and noise.

Right, that's one of the reasons I recommended the 3200BEKT over the 7K320.

    Thanks for all this guys

I did not realise they were £100.00.

I thought they would be a little more that a desktop HDD.

But I was so so wrong.

Little to rich for me blood, with kids and all.

Thanks again, and sorry to waste your guys time.

Man I really wanted a 320gb 7200 drive but Dell's price sucked. Now after reading this thread I am thinking maybe I might take out my 250gb as soon as I receive it and stick it in my 80GB PS3 and buy a new 320gb 7200 for the XPS. Is the PS3 sata?

    Yes

    PS3 is SATA.
